Default Questions about the PSE Hack on a 3.4

After talking to a number of people, I have been advised against installing muffler bypass valves. I did a test run with my exhaust off, and although fun, I don't think I could tolerate the drone on the highway for more than an hour. Its a bit too loud.

Moving to my question, who here has done the PSE Hack? It seems like a good medium for me. I love the sound in the clips I have heard.

The problem is, I have the 3.4 exhaust. The general consensus is that the sound improvement is not so great on the 3.4 cans as opposed to the 3.6's (when doing the MKII mod).

From what I understand:
-MKII mod (3.6) - There is a 2 1/4 pipe from bypass to outlet [see pic1]
-MKI mod (3.4) - A small bypass pipe is cut in, between the inlet and outlet of the muffler [see pic2]

So since I want a noticeable difference, I figured I should go with the MKI mod. I have seen tons of feedback on the MKII mod, but very little on the MKI mod. The only person I found who did it was here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...haust-mod.html

He used 1 1/4 pipe between the inlet and outlet. I am just wondering if anyone else has done this, and what are your results? Have you used the same sized piping? Will a larger diameter pipe produce more sound?
And can I bring this to any muffler shop and have it done?

Thanks alot!

i have the mk1 mod on my p-car. it's about 30% louder than stock. no drone.

i have heard that the mk2 is the way to go if you want it 80% of a PSE.

send a pm to FisterD on the 993 side - he is famous for having flawlessly performed hundreds of these mods for the hotter-than-aire 993 cars - he even did one for me. He might have some good info and points the for water-baby cars. You simply send your cans to him and he turns them around in his shop in a matter of days. Or for faster service, do a swap - he had already-modded cans on the shelf. Unbelievable service, materials, quality and fine reputation. No affiliation yadda-yadda-quack-quack.

do the swap.

I found a set of 3.6 cans (in very good shape, dont buy junk just because "you fouond some") I had them modded, and swapped them in.... then sold the 3.4 cans for a fair price to someone that wanted them.

FisterD is great, but be aware.... its not cheap, he is running a business and that is just how it is. If you do it yourself (or local muffler shop) you run the risk of getting a lesser quality job, but it might cost less. I had a friend who owns a tubing shop do mine for a "favor" and I bought him lunch and some beer....unless you weld, that is the only options (and by "weld" I mean weld really good, not make sparks and have the parts kinda stick together)

PS... they are NOT loud, I had the bypass pipes first. This is the way to go!

I much prefer the mod shown here on the 997 cans (MkI), as opposed to the close up photo of the 996 muffler (MkII). MkI has better sound, throatier and a bit more volume. I call it Stage II (MKI on Rlist). It is pretty much the only mod I do on 996/997s. It also works really well on 3.4 cans. MkII does not work on 3.4 cans. I also believe you get what you pay for (unless you have a friend that is a welder). If you take it to a muffler shop, be sure they use stainless pipe and weld it with stainless. If not, it may sound good for a while...but rust never sleeps. And on a 911, with the exhaust sitting right behind the rear wheels, it can get ugly. I use larger then 1 1/4" piping, and it sounds great.

Hey Fister. I have only heard good things about your work! Thanks for chiming in. What size piping do you suggest I use? I was thinking of going with 1 1/2" to do the MKI (aka stage II). I will deffinitely be going with stainless steel.
Also, do you suggest I just a U shaped pipe online to it can be cut in half and used by the welder? Or should I just go with whatever piping they have? I'm assuming they could bend it without too much trouble.

I usually use 1 3/4" pipe. A "U' shaped piece does the trick, cut in half. Make sure they cut the hole the same size as the pipe you are using (no drill or hole saw). This has to be cut with a plasma because it is not a perfect circle. Do not push the pipe into the existing muffler pipes. You want the pipes to be flush at the welds, not overlapping.
