Default Oil Pressure Guage Question

The oil pressure guage on my '02 Cab tends to be erratic at times fluctuating wildly then acting normal. The today, I got a "indicator failure" for the oil pressure guage in my obc display and noticed that the pressure was at zero. Then the guage went back up to close to 5 again extinguishing the message in the OBC. It did this several times over about a half an hour period. Does this sound liek the sending unit failing?

The actual oil light has not come on, but this is still bothersome. I am in an area at the moment where there is no dealer. I don't think the engine has lost oil pressure to zero then mysteriously got it back. It would either make pressure or not.

Does this sound like a sender?

Thanks,
Tony

I'm sure others will chime in too, but this does sound like the sender. I have had two "zero" readings just out of the blue then never again.

Yes, sending unit is bad. I had this repaired about a month ago. part is like $60, install is ~2hours. Dealer dinged me for $375, warranty picked it up. Not an uncommon problem.

If cleaning and reseating the terminals doesn't work, and you don't want to spend $375, here is the DIY.

+1
start with the simple - cheap repair......

though we had a bad oil pressure relief valve spring break recently
LINK

Still start at the sending unit with cleaning.... the replacing.... then look further
GL and post your findings

I have a date with an Indy on July 2nd to do mine and he told me it will be an hour labour at $105 bucks (CAN). Not sure about the part cost but $75 CAN here or there would be about right considering the exchange rate.

I just tried cleaning the contacts with with emory cloth and that made no real difference. Sometimes it will idle showing 3 bars then it wil just start jumping up and down like a loose connection. Unless there is a break in the wire, I am going to suspect the sending unit is wigging out! I have never seen a sender on a car that has two connectors, one for the oil pressure light and the other for the guage if that is in fact what the two wires are for!

I will order the switch from one of the vendors on this forum and follow up with the results.

Thanks,
Tony

I replaced the sending unit and the problem is gone. You have to have patience and work by feel, but I didn't have to modify any tool. I did remove the right rear wheel and heat shield in order to break loose the sending unit as I couldn't get enough leverage reaching through the a/c hoses.

I now have 2.5-3 bar at idle when hot and 4-4.5 bar at highway speeds and no fluctuating needle.

Thanks for the information.

Tony
