It seems there are suddenly more than a few 3.6 996 examples out there in the 30k range. Not sure how long you're looking to own, but let's say 4 years and 5k/year. Unloading even a nice example limited edition 911 with 80k on it will be harder than a lower mileage C2 in my opinion.
Saw this on autotrader, 2002 C2 with 30k:

Slate grey (I'm biased on this color
) and natural full leather interior. 30k miles. Provided the carfax is straight and there's no hidden surprises (and you like the funky GT2-ish front bumper cover), that would be more along the lines of what I'd spend my 30k on. You can buy more warranty that way if you plan on keeping it a long time, and the resale will likely be the same or higher than a higher-mileage C4S or 40th.
Get a PPI and a warranty. That way, you know there's no IMS/RMS/other costly acronym and if there is down the road, it doesn't cost you five figures. And I highly recommend you drive whatever you buy like you stole it!

Here's my .02. The C4S looks better IMO. But the 40th has the X51, is lighter, and could possibly hold it's value better. So it's looks versus performance, show versus go, whichever is more important to you. Judging from the pics, which is a dangerous thing to do, the C4S does seem to be in better shape. It also looks to be lowered while the 40th has stock suspension that you'll want to change. Figure a couple thousand for that.
If you feel they each have their own advantages I'd PPI both of them and whichever seems more sound and has the best documentation should carry the day.

I pulled the trigger on my dream car yesterday. I bought it from the owner of http://www.protechnik.com/ in Houston. It's a super clean ride with only 1 ding but he will pull it out this Saturday. Car has 32000 miles and you have to look to find wear on the inside. I've been reading about IMS and RMS for over a week now and it sure is scary. There really is no piece of mind on those two things but I'm willing to live with it as 911s sure are nice.

Seriously - sounds great. As the owner of that establishment - did he have any suspension work done on it? Seems like he would...

Yep, I got the 40th. He kept it bone stock. He told me the reason he did this was he wanted more power then what was offerred on the S so this was the cheapest solution to adding more power. As far as getting mass power, he said the cheapest way to do that was to get a turbo as turbos are really easy to mod/reprogram. No sense turning an non-aspirated to something that can never be quicker then a modded turbo. He never did anything to the suspension, but he did give me a quote of 1500 for pss9s installed! I'm not much of a racer as I want to make this car last me as long as it will since my wife isn't going to approve this decision again for awhile. I did find a cheap solution to RMS and IMS for anyone buying a m96 porsche. I am buying the warranty from my credit union for only 1580.00 that covers engine, transmission and the rest of be basic mechanicals.

Hi, I am in the market for a 911. I have narrowed my options down to 2 cars. My main concern is not performance but rather reliability as in ims or rms as both cars have mileage in the 60s. here are my options
04 40th anniversary fully loaded with 63000 for 30500
or
02 C4S with decent options and 67,000 for 32,400
I like the looks of the c4s way better but the 40th is no joke either especially since it's a limited edition.
thanks for your help.

40th hands down... but he 40th had the single bearing IMS which usually fail... @ 60,000 miles you'd have to do compression, leakdown test as well.... if it were my car and it was out of warranty I'd have that single bearing IMS replaced with Jake Raby's solution just for peace of mind...
but the leakdown should be key...was the car tracked at all? most X51 cars are tracked hard then sold off on open market...

Hi guys, here is my car as promised, it's a pretty awesome machine. It came with 33,500 miles so it's in tip top shape with near none signs of use. I'm not worried about the IMS yet since I got a warranty on engine, transmission and all major parts. I will have all the test done before the warranty ends at 70,000 miles. If IMS or RMS does hit, then I will claim the insurance and have the new part installed. Thanks for your tips and advice in making this purchase.
