I live in Austin, TX. thanks for the input fellas. I'm now leaning towards the 40th despite the turbo look. I just know I will fret the long drive back from CA. I saw on Ebay that there is a Car Max inspection done on it already.

A Car Max inspection is good for precisely nothing. Please put no faith in that and certainly don't rely on it. Listen to the advice you are being given and have the car inspected prior to purchase by an a dealer or and indy Porsche shop. You don't really know anything about these cars yet. Get service records and the PPI before you commit.

That's very good advice. Also, that way, if it needs anything critical, you could have it done before the long drive home, and negotiate the cost down to cover what it needs.

Good luck.

Hard choice. I'd go 40th.

The 2002 C4S engine has a newer style black oil cap instead of the older style yellow one. I'm wondering if it's had an engine replaced.

Whichever car you choose, you will need to get a PPI. Preferably from a Porsche dealer so they can run the VIN and get a partial service history on the car. They can see if the engine's been swapped or other repairs under warranty.

If you are really concerned about reliability, many Porsche dealers will sell you an aftermarket extended warranty if the car passes PPI. It's not CPO, but it's usually a reputable insurer. Just make sure that your local dealer accepts that warranty.

I'd get the 40th for sure.

I wouldn't worry about the drive back either - however far the drive back was. These cars are great on road trips, and it's a good way to get to know your car - and fun, too.

I'm biased but I'd vote for the 40th. I bought mine in Baltimore and drove it back to Tulsa. It was an enjoyable drive and gives you some "away" time to enjoy your new car!

I would go with the 40th too. Faster, factory lowered suspension, GT Silver, most have all the options posible(nav and rear wiper were only options you could get, I beleive), and I think it will hold is value longer because it was a limited edition.
Which ever car you get get a PPI. Do put trust in Carmax, Carfax, or any other car history report.

It's taking me longer to type this than to think about it.... 40th no doubt. But as a previous 40th owner, I'm biased.

Whatever you decide, buy a piece of mind and get an aftermarket warranty.

Default ppi location

Thanks for the advice, I have put down a refundable deposit on the 04 anniversary. I plan on closing the deal on Wednesday-Thursday so I'm ordering a PPI on the car tomorrow. Do the inspectors come out to the dealer's lot or does the dealer need to bring the car to the place where they do the inspection? It's in Anaheim CA.

Thanks

I like your decision! I chose a 40th over a 4S after driving each for a half day. Both were one year old and lightly used. I liked the looks of the 4S, but the significant performance gap made the decision easy for me.

Good luck with the PPI, and +1 on the aftermarket warranty.

You call the Porsche dealer and set up the appointment. If you are **** retentive (like I am) it's useful to give them a written list of specific things to check e.g. IMS/RMS leak, presence of all tools, manuals, keys, Type 1+2 over revs etc.. In all likelihood you will speak to the service writer who will not be the tech who actually inspects the car which is why a checklist is helpful. You pay the dealer directly. You can also ask the dealer about warranties they can offer you.

Then you call the seller and tell them to drop off the car at the specified time and date.

Type 1 is bump against the rev-limiter while type 2 is usually a mechanical over-rev (missed down shift).
