It's one of the very best cars I've been in on track. As long as you don't mind having a focused sports car, you're not going to find something much better than your current set up without spending quite a bit more $. You've done most of the dirty work already -hurry up on the A/C though! Unless you are considering getting out of cars for good, I don't think it would make much sense to get rid of it. You'll see what I mean if you come to Alfa in two weeks.

Also, I don't think an e46 M3 compares as a "sports car" to a 996. They're not of the same species, the 996 is a much more involving experience. I say this as a long time BMW fan, and a former owner of several older M3s.

ahmet, you speaking the praises of my 944 or are you talking about the 996? Eh who needs A/C?
It is a blast on track (i just discovered its lower-than-expected top speeds and brake overheating were due to my front wheel bearings being too tight...oops) but age does its thing and it is constantly falling apart.
I do want to go to the alfa small bore event...but I HAVE to get my engine mounts replaced and don't know if I'll have time to.
The 944 will remain the autox/track toy...from what Fission says it sounds like what I really want is to replace my 325 with an M3...because I still do need something a bit more practical. The 944 would be a lot more practical if it wasn't constantly full of tools and spare parts waiting to be installed.
Well there's always waiting and saving...hopefully sports car prices won't bounce back too much. Everything is so cheap right now I'm just itching to get something I guess.
Maybe passing some 911s at VIR-N in a few weeks will make me feel better.

The miles kill the resale value quickly on these cars. The low mileage ones aren't worth that much and there are so many of them available that the high mileage ones don't get many looks. Here's a base '99 C2 cab with a clear title and 99k miles that sold in the $14ks on eBay:

I agree, although I am looking at the low end for my project car, there are hundreds of cars sub 20K out there right now. I don't think the prices are up for the economy, I think it is just spring.
This one came up today on ebay. 99 with new reman engine for less than 20K. Haven't looked to closely, but on its face looks like a good deal.

It's not that it's recovering...people are just starting to get in touch with reality that it has gone down.
That one in FL actually looks interesting since FL is where I'll be moving...but that wing is a bit underwhelming.
Okay so they've started coming in....just go ahead an PM me your sales pitch lol.
I'm sorry, Mark, all I heard was "useless emissions control equipment."
Where I'm from, it's like the metric system. In beaufort county, NC, what is E-missions?

Auction data shows 99's were going for 19.5 in May 08, in April 09, they are at 15K. That's a big drop in a year, 25%, and has to be a result of the economy.
10 year old cars typically don't fall that fast on thier own.

Just checked the trade-in on my '99 C4 with 53k miles...KBB says over $20k yet, and I've got a reman engine in it with about 10k miles on it, so I'd shoot for $25k if I sold it.

To OP: I wouldn't pay a penny over $22K for the 996 in that ad. Keep looking and you will find one at that price. The most a dealer would pay for that car is $15K

Cars being traded in auction are pristine and require no work in order to be sold.
While an auction maybe ideal for a serious DIYer like Mike; it is not for the typical, rennlist, porsche buyer.
