Import 996 to Europe... done !
Hi all,
I have relocated to Europe, 2 months ago and when i tried to find some info about the details back then, i could not find much details, so here it is:
- taxes and duties: you won't have to pay VAT nor customs duties if you have lived in the US for more than a year and have owned your car over 6months prior to relocating
- shipping: for $900 w/o insurance you will be able to ship your car from the east coast to any major port in EU; count $100 of insurance for every $10,000... and i suggest insuring it for $30k in case it gets damaged in shipping to cover for repairs... no boats with DAS has ever sunk.
- Arrival in Europe: no need to hire someone to help you thru customs, its really quick as long as you have all the documents proving you are relocating to EU (HR letter etc...) - you will need a proof of address in the US and in the country ur relocating to. Admin fees should run for less than $100
- parts to be changed: I recon it might be quite different on any model prior to the 996, but here are the changes I had to make on my 996 C4S: passenger mirror (since it has the reading "objects may appear closer ...."), blinkers, switch all the gauges into km/h (push of a button) and have your front & rear tires of a matching brand. That's it. it cost me $1,000 incl. labor. Xenons, winshields, PSE were all OK and EU approved.
- Certificate & title: once the works done at the local P-dealer, Porsche will deliver a certificate that can be used at the local DMV-equivalent in order to obtain the title.
I could have sold my car in the US for $38k max, while the value is around 55Keur here. Don't ask me why, I can't explain such a drastic difference.
Hope it helps - shoot me an email if you need more details

Wow good post - and smart move to bring the car to the euro market where the value is still so high. Of course buying something new in Europe will be expensive too! I suppose if you're there less than 6 months you could euro deliver a new p-car at US prices

I took it to France, which is the most painful country to please from a legislation standpoint. Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal should be much easier than that I recon.
I'll send you pictures when i take it for a spin in the wine country near Bordeaux ;-)

I shipped my C2 to Europe last summer through Ruf Germany. It was quite painless since they took care of customs and delivery. Many cars in Europe are driven more with highter mileage. My car is worth much more there than in Canada.
Make sure you make a stop at the ring...

Congrats and thanks for the lesson. I recall how incredibly inexpensive it is to ship a car across the pond (I suspect many auto carriers are virtually empty going that way).
Be sure and stop off at Cafe Du Commerce in Ile De Re for a beer. Say hello to Pierre for me.
