I also switched from a 944 turbo (actually I've owned 8 of them in various levels of prep, from a bone stock 20k mile turbo S to a fully gutted caged track car). The 996 is a great platform, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I don't go for bling mods either, but the GT3 badging wouldn't bother me too much personally. I mean, it already has the body kit. Speaking of, it does seem to make a difference on track.

Great car. I know you'll love it. Sucks about your 951. It was one of the cleanest around. I know you won't regret the 996 though. They are truly wonderful cars.
