As the wood ages inthe 996s keep a close eye on it. One of our club members has a 996 turbo and the wood is falling apart. It's a fairly thin veneer and it just can't handle the heat, if allowed to simply sit in a parking lot during the day.
Perhaps you can cover it up, or moisturize it periodically. Don't let it go bad!! (You probably wouldn't want to know what a piece of that stuff costs later to replace).
Personally, I think a little wood is just fine. The original 911s had wood dashes.

Yeah, at one time I was seriously considering a nice kind of bronze metallic 996 that had full leather and the wood pieces.
It was very nice, but seemed more like a Mercedes interior, a bit of out of character....

I agree with Nicholaas. Staining it with a Walnut or Cherry (or a mixture of the two) would make it look very similar to the Makassar wood. Even if it was a half shade off, I don't think the difference would be noticable.

I think it would look better if it was stained darker. I couldn't quite get the red hue correct, but this is what it might look like.

It's a good idea to get it to match. I just happened to have a piece of rosewood leftover from another project and so I used it. My goal was to cover up, and not to draw attention to it (particularly since it is covering up the radar detector controls). In retrospect, most 'authorities' would have no idea that that piece wasn't stock and not notice it in the least. Perhaps I can play with some of the stains I have around the place and report back!
