Default B&M Short Shifter Install

For those who've installed a B&M Short Shifter I was wondering whether or not its a total Pain In the A... or something a modest DIY guy can accomplish ?

Are there any do's and don'ts ?

How long did it take?

Any problems ?

Love the imput...

Thanks

Try a search there is a bunch of detailed information. It is not hard at all, a modest DIY person should really not have any issues. The only tricky part is making sure the shift cables are marked - or do not remove them if you can.

Bob,

If you can turn a screwdriver and read directions, you CAN do this. The B&M instillation instructions are very good.

B & M Installation Instructions

The first time you do a SSK install it will take 1.5 to 2.0 hours, because you will be taking it very slow and reading the directions as you proceed. If you were to do a second one it would take maybe an hour.

In step #23, when you cut the stock bushing clips, don't bother using a utility knife. Use a sharp chisel and a hammer to cut the tabs. That will save time and effort.

Test drive it before you reinstall the rear center console. That way, if you need to make an adjustment, it will be quick and easy to do.

If you want a shift assembly I have a spare you can do the SSK on THEN just swap your old one... that way you are not rushed to do the hardest part, you will have it done...If you are interested I am asking $30 for it, and when you swap yours out - you can keep you old one to go back to stock later, or sell it for ?$30?

It is very easy... I felt embarrassed for hesitating once the install was complete. While I was there I took the opportunity to install a new center console and e-brake...

Luckily Porsche's are clearly built by men with fat fingers - there is no trickery or minute complex "fittings" to worry about. Just get out your socket set, take your time, and follow the instructions.

Good luck!

I'm a DIY guy. "Dial it Yourself" and have the dealer install it.

Well....I'm with Phil on this one (at least have an INdy do it). I have read too many threads about folks with a notchey shift. Mine is NOT notchey at all because it was installed and adjusted properly.

Just make sure you count the threads before removing the cables.

Thats exactly what I did - plus I took picture along the way just in case I forgot where certain cables went... etc... (never had to look at them).

Shifter is silky smooth - just a LOT shorter than OEM.

Very easy, about an hour all in.

One of the best mods around.

Quick question for everyone who has done the install.

I installed mine back in (probably) November. I marked the cables, but I guess I didn't put them back exactly in the correct spot. I didn't have much time, but I tried to play around with them for a couple of minutes, but the shifter still felt a little notchy.

Now that it's spring, I'll have a bit more time to play around with it. Can I assume that it should just be a matter of moving the cables back and forth until they are in the correct notches? There should not be any other adjustments that could be made, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Eric,

That is correct. I think that even when the cables are in the perfect position, the SSK will feel a little notchy that the stock shifter.

I agree,
has anyone tried to pop the cables off the tranny and then see if the problem goes away... or with out it hooked up on that end would there be no useful info obtained?

Tim,
Thanks. That's what I heard by searching. Although based on the descriptions, I think mine is "notchier" than it should be.

I was able to use a set of diagonal cutters (dykes) that did the job quite nicely.

Here is my addendum to the BM instructions. I'm sure there are a slew of helpful hints out there.

On a scale of 1 - 10 [1 being putting air in the tires, 10 being swapping the engine], this is around a 3 or 3.5.
