Default 1st mod!

I replaced the useless CD holder with a useful cubby. Took all of 5 seconds to pull the old one and insert the new part.

I also received my iPorsche kit today and am contemplating where to put my iPod. It will either go in the new cubby or in the center console compartment (wish I had a cool leather top with Carrera embossed on it ).

I also learned something new about the doors on the 996 -- depending on what level of audio equipment you have installed, the door has a large resonator cavity inside to increase the base response from the drivers in the door. Unfortunately for me, I'm used to a subwoofer directly underneath my where it can work to best effect. The good news is that my indy does audio work and says that it's easy enough to put two 8" subs on the rear shelf. Mmmm, too bad for no bonus for a while (unless I get some of that guvernment $$$).

I think pics are not required, but no one will complain!
as for the stereo, COOL... I personally am happy with stock but understand that some want a little more. Hope there are pics when you get that done!!

Aargghhh... still waiting for mine to get out of the shop... two more weeks, so they say...

Not that I've been idle in the mod department - my console upper cubby came in last Friday (to replace the cd holder...), I ordered some new headlight bulbs (6k K and 8k K), can't wait to see which ones look better... I ordered the silvered bulbs after the amberectomy and ran them down to the shop to install them... shopping for the wheel spacers (will 15mm really go on the front axle with stock 18" setup?) and getting ready to order the non-smoking ashtray replacement (can't believe that thing costs more than the cubby...), Then shopping for the audio... looking at the Pioneer 90BT navi unit, but worrying the speakers (4" coax in the back... found a 5.25" woofer for the doors and 4" components for the dash...) Oh yeah... working the cost benefit analysis on the Valentine radar/laser detector (for the wife)...

(I think this covers pages 3 and 4 of Tim's list...)

yea, I have 15mm in front and 7mm in the back... but since I am still running winter tires that are really small, I dont know what it really looks like. The weather is getting warmer and I might change to the summer tires next weekend. In the odd chance we have some cold (Seattle cold = 30 above zero) I should be OK to drive the truck one day till it passes.

Nice to have things you want to do to your car... heck some cars never get that lucky... then again, some drivers never get this lucky either

I got it turned up pretty loud yesterday after my window was fixed. I think it's pretty good too, which is why I'm going to stop with the iPod mod for now. Still, doesn't stop you from dreaming -- like the time I went into a HiFi store to demo some $16k gear but ended up buying the $250 Denon from BestBuy.

I've attached a snippet of my 996 wish list (note: doesn't include subwoofers) that I put together last week after visiting Custom Sounds.

Pics to follow on the iPod install (hopefully tonight).

Looks good! I want the semi cheap route... I installed the AVIC-Z and just used all the factory BOSE stuff.. its good enough for me.

I'm pretty sure that my car was built without the premium Bose package, so I'm dealing with the base level audio (no Bose grills, no amp up front, no subs). Isn't there a dealer tool that you can plug your VIN into and see what options the car came from the factory with?

I upgraded my car with the better sound system from the factory when I first ordered it - I checked the boxes for Motor Sound Package and Sport Muffler. Of course no point in spending money on a stereo system after that. Who could hear it? LOL!
The cubby is far more useful and the silly CD holder thing. The cubby was immmediately in there when I took delivery.
The ashtray replacement thing is an idea I have liked. But I also like the idea of having the little door over whatever is in there. So I got a small piece of black Alcantara and cut it and glued it into the ashtray. No noise, and still has a cover. It also matches the 3-spoke Alcantara steering wheel and shifter boot I installed last summer.

You should have a white sticker under your hood with all your option codes. Post them and we can decode.
The BOSE would have a subwoofer on the rear deck as well as BOSE on the front door speakers.

Consider yourself lucky. It's easier to upgrade if you DON'T have the stupid fiberoptic crap.
