You're almost there. The radio has released, it's just a pull away. You may find some funky work behind the radio once you remove it which is causing it to jamb.
FYI, generally you have to sacrifice a finger tip in order to get it out. It's how you can spot a true 996 DIYer.

Finally got it out. It took one person pulling on the removal tools and another pulling from the cassette slot. It was tight at least 1/2 way out. No wires or anything pinched holding it in - just tight. The replacement CDR-220 is just as tight going back in so I didn't slide it all the way in yet. Now I'm having second thoughts about using it and thinking about going aftermarket.

Interesting as my 220 radio is as tight as heck also. I must admit this is the first post on removing the radio that events of it being as difficult to pull out as I am experiencing.
