Default Tire purchase - Manufacturer date too old??

I'm thinking of picking up a set of new tires but they were manufactured in 2003& 2004. They are brand new...is the Manufacture date too old and will the tires be unsafe??

Thanks

I would not buy them. It doesn't matter that they are new, the compounds degrade over time. 5-6 years old already, that's too old.

I'm surprised to hear that tires of that age are even still available to be purchased. Most tire manufacturers take them back in trade as they 'ripen.' I would not take anything older than a year. 60 Minutes or someone like that recently did a tire age story and their recommendation was to make sure tires were not older than 7 years old when they get retired (no pun intended) from your car. If the tires are from 2003 they are already 6 years old,--and you should expect a couple of years of service from them, pushing their age out to 8 years. These tires need to be pliable,--and that is the element you're losing when buying them dried out.

you are the consumer here. you need to demand fresh tires. if they don't have them go to the next supplier.

I wouldn't take a chance. You must consider safety and money. How much are they asking for the tires?

Way too old. Owners manual states: "Under no circumstances should tires older than 6 years be used on your Porsche."

I dont disagree... but your reason doesnt hold water... unless you are on the "new math" system

My math is just fine. OP stated 2003 but did not state the week of manufacture. It could have been week 1 which makes the 2003 tires too old.

I have a 2003 model car. I replaced all four Pirellis with new tires in 2007 even though the car only had 6,000 miles on it. Around corners, the tires were very slippery and was way down on traction. It's really obvious how bad they were even with full tread.
