When you rev your engine in neutral, can you hold any rpm below 2.4k?
Mine ('03 egas) is like whenever I gives some gas, the rpm climbs from 700 to 2.4k steadily and never stops in between no matter how I try. Is that normal?

 

Yes I can hold 1000 RPM. I know this for a fact because when my MAF was faulty, my car would stall at idle after it warmed up. I had to constantly hold my foot on the accelerator when stopped at a traffic light - tricky business when the brake and clutch need attention too. I figured this skill would be worthless - but now at least i can give you this data point.

I've not done it in neutral, but have done it in gear. Mine's an 03 as well.

 

is the throttle body/maf clean?

yes I can hold rpm from idle on up...

 

Yes, no problem in gear at all. "Problem" is only during neutral.

Yes, I cleaned the TB a while back and it was not dirty (car has ~30k miles now). Car drives very well. Is your egas or cable?

yes, e-gas... so, no matter how slight you press the gas pedal, you cant keep the rpm at say 1500rpm in neutral?... what about when the clutch is depressed?

 

Correct, no matter how slightly I press the gas pedal, I can't hold a steady rpm < 2.4k (I can do that with other cars I have so it's not my foot ). The engine will keep reving up (or down) slowly between 750 (idle) and 2.4k without stopping anywhere in the middle. That's why I think it's weird and worth asking the question here.

Mine did the same.

I chalked it up to a MAF failure but I'm not sure that would be the cause or not. I never tried after I replaced it to hold RPM again.

 

def not right... Im wondering if the gas pedal potentiometer is dirty or bad... nothing is obstructing (behind) the pedal right?

How about when you drive it?.... can you maintain rpm below 2.4krpm

Thanks for the data point. I'm hoping more people will try and see so I can conclude whether this is just the way these cars are or there's something wrong with it. This "problem" does make modulation harder and more conscious than it should be at times (e.g., stop-and-go traffic). I also wonder if it's the MAF but I thought MAF only matters at higher RPMs.

I checked and there's nothing obstruting and the potentiometer does feel a tiny bit notchy/sticky but I don't think that's enough to create such behavior.

I remember mine would wander until ~3k and then it would stable.

 

my 04 does the same. if you depress the clutch you can control the rpm to any speed.

i would like to know if you notice any vibration at 2000 rpm.

 

Thanks and that's exactly what I suspect (that this is normal). I'll try the clutch in and see. I think I do have a slight vibration @2k as well. Will get back here once the rain stops and I can drive my car again.
