Default 996 Tranny bellhousing cracked

Hi all. Im new to the board and have a question regarding a 2000 996 6-speed. A relative of mine said that he experienced some noise eminating from the engine/tranny and then a few days later, he found the tranny cracked at the bellhousing. It seemed the crack was all the way around the bellhousing. The car has 50,000 miles and it is not abused. I can't think of a reason why a bellhousing would crack that big. First I thought the dual mass flywheel had failed and somehow struck the bellhousing. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm a bit worried too as my 99 could have the same situation down the line. Thanks in advance.

I purchased a used tranny engine combo some time back for cheap that had the same problem however as to the reason speed bump and irresponsible speed was the cluprit. Professionally rewelded and now have as a back up just incase.

The only other thing that comes to mind is a rear-end collision that's was hard enough to make use of the engine / transmission as impact force distribution

I looked everywhere underneath and I couldnt find any sign of a rear end collision. There's vibration coming from the engine/tranny and I am not sure whether this is an IMS failure. The timing is still intact so it idles fine and no noises.

failed dual-mass flywheels can cause vibration issues... a bad IMS bearing doesn't usually cause vibrations - just makes it idle rough (and eventually not run at all) and sound like the engine is full of rocks, later accompanied by an extremely large oil leak.
