09 Cayman S superceeds the 996
#46
As long as you enjoy driving your car 996, 3.4 or 3.6, no big deal. If you want to have the fastest, you've got to be willing to spend the $ to upgrade every few years or so. Anything that does sub-5s 0-60, 170mph + top speed and handles well is quick enough in my opinion.
One of these days, I wouldn't be too surprised if Accords/Camrys are in the 300/320hp range!

Camry's, Accords, and Maxima's are pretty close to that now.

hey john.
i did both, 996c2 to cay s.
i am faster in cay s for sure. the difference is most dramatic at BW and SP. at TH and LS, the tq of C2 has some advantages over cay.
i had less prob (reliability and durability issues) in the C2 vs cay s.
if they put GT3 motor, LSD and a better gear box in the cay. all of my GT3's will be on the block.

I agree none of this matters... you just gotta drive the one that makes you happiest. I only sold the Cayman S 'cause I needed back seats for the kid. But the bonus is the 996 has surprised me by being more fun (IMHO) on the track.
At Sears Point my best laptimes in the Cayman S were in the 1:55.6 to 1:56.0 range; (stock CS on 888 tires). Same track last month in the (new to me) '03 996 C2 I managed to run 1:55.1. Again, stock car but this time on MPSCups. The Cayman had the PASM suspension. The 996 has US M030 and factory Aerokit (fwiw).
At TH my Cayman S did 2:07.7 on 888's, whereas my 996 did an easy 2:09.0 on STREET TIRES on my first day with it. FWIW.
But my data is meaningless: I'm no Pro. Who knows which is truly faster? I think it's too close to call.
My point is simply that I'm having as much (or maybe more) fun in the 996 as I was in the CS.... therefore I don't think 996 owners need to worry about whether or not the new DFI Cayman S is going to "supercede" their ride. I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it.
