Honda’s? I imagine you are correct. I was simply making the point there are many cars that may look better or more capable on paper.

I don't think the old GT1 based engine in the current GT3 will be used in the next model. I would love to have the 9A1 3.8l in the Cayman S. Why can't Porsche have 2 models on par with one another, one for the 911 fans that need baby seats and another for those that want an modern affordable mid-engined Porsche. Porsche can keep their turbo's reserved for the 911.

Could have went either way. Give the boxster LSD and it would have been no contest.

If you are worried about passing at the track, do what I did.

I attended a Crown Region event at Roebling a couple months ago, at the invitation of a buddy who won a weekend in a pro-trainer vehicle for each of us. I figured they'd be older 996 cars, mabye 993's.

Nope.

944's. Stripped and race ready. All in the green group - my first track event. Drove the 944 for 4 heats first day, 5 heats second day, and was PASSING 996, 997 AND 997 Turbos. No, I'm not some crazy nut case, but the turbos were owned by their drivers, and were likely not being pushed to the limit, we could only pass on the single straight, and my instructor was a true race pro who pushed me to the limit. I never had so much fun in my life.

Blast. And I currently own one of those slow, heavy, poky hp cars ('04 C4S Cab). I ain't worried.

+1

I've passed 996's, 996TT's and I even passed a 997 GT3RS this year (in group 1 no less) with my Boxster. The driver makes a huge difference.

I'm with Jim on this one. I think the Cayman is one of the finest Porsches ever made. I wish Porsche would give it even more power.

Yup, used to pass all kinds of cars in my Audi Station Wagon...Ferraris, Porsches, etc, etc. In the end though, you definitely notice pushing 3900 lbs around on 4 smallish contact patches. But it was a hoot and I could bring a toolbox, 4 extra tires and wheels and luggage to the track and take it all home

Not to hijack this thing, but I didn't find this to be so clear-cut. I have owned both, tracked both, and, stock-for-stock, I'd say they are pretty closely-matched on the track in terms of laptimes. The 3.6 996 mk2 C2 coupe, in my case is currently proving to be FASTER, actually, than my '07 Cayman S (w/ PASM & Sport Chrono) was at the same tracks with equivalent tires (all else being stock), in spite of the fact that the 996mk2 is a little heavier.

Perhaps I'll elaborate in a seperate thread, since I'm not sure how many R-Listers have done this move (from a Cayman S to a 996). The differences in their on-track behavior is proving to be quite interesting (at least to me).

Peace

My statement was pretty broad and unqualified. I've driven many 996s on many tracks and one Cayman S on one track so my experience is somewhat limited. I've also raced an X51 996 against a CS and won but not by much. I'd say in general that a stripped down (light) 3.6L 996 might get the better of a CS on a high speed track. I'd take the CS any day on a tight track.

It would be fun to run stock versions of both back to back. Anyone want to volunteer their cars?

I took a test drive in a CS when it first came out. Made my butt pucker!

Can't stand the poor visability and claustrophobic feel though.
