Little slash on the tire
Hi,
I just noticed today that my rear right tire has a 1.5" cut, close to the rim. I think I probably hit something as the rim is slightly bumped as well. I am not sure when that happened, but I wanted to see how safe it was to drive with that tire - the cut is not expending. Given that those tires are almost new, I was not planning on changing them until I mount the winter tire for the cold season. I am supposed to pick up the winter tires in 2 weeks. Do you think it's drivable until then (daily driver)
Also, if I have to change it, can I just change that 1 tire or change both rear tires?

a picture would be great..
My advise is to run it down to the tire shop and have them look at it. (or alignment, or P-Car Indy shop) Someone you trust with you car. Do you have road hazard on these? you might get a free replacement, then if you replace in pairs, just buy 1 and have both..
I have a "wierd" rear tire too and my Alignment Guy has me come by every 3k miles so he can see what it is doing, so far he says "drive it" Hey he is the expert
gl and good morning

Take it to a tire shop and get them to take a look with the tire off the rim.
You may have structural damage that you can't see from the outside.
And, they'll check your rim, which given the damage, is probably no longer round.

Will take pictures tomorrow... but the damage on the rim is not noticeable. I can barely feel it when I put my finger on it. I have been told that tire shops can usually glue cuts when they are on the side (not on the part that touches the road)... will take it there tomorrow

At a minimum, I'd replace the tire. I found a similarly sized slice in the sidewall of my right front tire when when I bought my car a few months ago, and had the tire replaced immediately. I may be overly cautious, but I didn't want the sidewall to let go in a corner and risk something ugly.

Perhaps there is a cut in the external protection ring for the rims, and this is not a problem, but as the other guys said, better to go a tire shop to get it checked.

Just got back from the shop - the guy told me it could not be fixed. Given it is a 4WD, he told me I had to change the 4 tires and recommended I take all seasons tires since I am not using the car on the track
He quoted me $1100 for 285R/225F Goodyear F1 tires
Do you think these are good tires?
That will also wave me from buying winter tires as well given that winter in MASS are pretty rough
Thanks

As others said, pics would be good. All seasons suck on these cars. They are a compromise in winter and summer. I'd get good snows for the winter and switch back when it warms up.

I have Bridgestone Potenza R050 A and I'm very glad with them
GY Eagle f1 are very good at wet conditions, and have a good balance, but I'll ask for other tires included N specs porsche approved

Seriously, post the pics for the internet experts....
You probably would have driven on the tire all summer without even knowing it was there.

here is a pic of the cut - I cannot see the inside of the tire even though it is probably 1/10 of an inch deep- so I would assume it might just be superficial

From a safety point that is a tough call.
As far as needing to replace all 4 tires...that's a bunch of BS!
You don't even rotate tires on a 911, so why would u need 4 new tires?
That guy is either a moron or a crook, take your pick.
If the opposite side is fairly new, I would only replace the damaged tire. Doesn't even have to be the exact same tire as long as it close in design and shape (ie if they updated to a new version). If it's fairly worn I would replace those 2 only.
Tell the tire guy that if he can fit the first 2 tires up his ***, you'll buy the whole set!

I think I am going to replace both tires on the back, and will put sumitomo (another shop quoted me $480 for both, incl. install + rotation etc...) - should be enough for another 2/3weeks - then I will need to get a winter tire within the next couple of weeks

Looks like a nasty cut and since the sidewalls take so much stress when cornering hard it is definately a good idea to change the tire out!
