I don't usually hang around here as I have a 928, but the first porsche I ever drove was a 996 coupe in that silverish goldish color...I wanted one since then plus it didnt help my dad had a 996TT. Problem was I was 16 at the time and I worked at a carwash and I've come a long way since that and now I have more disposable income and I'm getting rid of the 928 seeing that prices of 996 so much attainable to me I'm seriously considering getting one. What am I to look for in a 996??
Are you looking for a tiptronic? The 2 reasons the car is so cheap is b/c it's an automatic & the high mileage. It does have nice options though. I looked it up on carfax...clean carfax w/3 owners. I know, I know carfax isn't the end all be all but it's a nice to know. If this is really what you are looking for, be sure to get a PPI.

Joey,
Between those 2 cars I would almost lean towards the tiiptronic. With that much mileage on it most of the bugs have been worked out.
The manual has so few miles on it, I would call it a "garage queen". These cars would prefer to be driven on a regular basis (like every other day).
Best would be to find something in between and possibly from someone on Rlist or Rtech.
There are 2 good things for you:
1. The economy. Prices on 911 are dropping and folks are dumping them left and right.
2. The 2009's are coming out this month and there have been significant improvements. That will further drive down the price of a 1999 911.
In the meantime, learn everything you can about the years you are considering. Find a good local Porsche mechanic to pick his brain and do an inspection for u.
Be patient, time is on your side...
Good luck,

PLus the new PDK automatic comes out which will most likely get those tiptronic owners to upgrade leaving more on the market.. just a thought..

I like that car...like the color...like the interior, looks well cared for...and like the price. For $18K, you should keep about another $10K or a bit more for a new engine....that would be my only reservation about this car....although I dont' know much about the longevity of the tiptronic trannys.....but I do like that color combo. Just be aware that with that sort of mileage, you're probably on borrowed time with regard to a new engine and/or tranny....the highest mileage I've seen before engine replacement was 177K kms.
I would recommend Searching Ebay right now. They have had better deals than Autotrader or anywhere else I have searched. You might want to expand your search to other states as well. I like Arizona and Florida. Stay away from snowy states.
Always look at the pics of the engine compartment. If they don't even bother to clean the engine before taking a pic, that says something.
If you look at this pic you can tell that this guy was into 911's. He replaced the air intake pipe w/ silicone, plus the short shifter and other mods suggest that he was into the car, but probably didn't track it. If the PPI is clean and the recent service was complete and documented, this car would be a candidate.
They want $23,800 but obviously aren't getting it. I would call the guy directly and start about $5 grand below asking. They probably bought this car at an auction. Dog him for the high mileage, condition of the interior, and lack of a warranty. Ask him about the RMS, (which he won't know a damn thing about) and then start in about the high failure rate. Work your way up to your max price, if no deal, then walk away. Keep in mind that it will cost about $600 to ship the car to California.
We have a member, El Torrente, with 130K miles on the original clock I think. Pick up a car with a replacement engine if you are patient.
You can have someone come and teach you how to drive manual. Its a one day course and your driving experience will change forever even if you are not shifting in a Porsche.

That's less than 110k miles...you haven't been looking very hard.
