It can be done, but why??

If you really want a 997 just wait 6-9 months. Once the 997 Mk II's start shipping I suspect early 997s will take a hit.

Just wondering the costs I personally wouldn't do it. Everything comes at its time huh?

996 is the BEST bang for the buck of any Porsche available. Don't let this bad engine talk discourage you. Avoid really low mileage cars, under 30K. If the engine has already been replaced, great, bonus for you. If the car is like mine, original engine with 64 K, also a safe bet. If the engine hasn't blow after 64K miles the odds are it's a good engine. Check out Excellence magazine Sept 2008 issue, it has a write up on the 996. You can easily get a sweet 1999-2001 996 ( 300 hp ! ) for under 24K. Sure some engines have failed, but many of these cars have been on the road 5 - 10 years already, the ones with bad engines have been replaced.

I'm not trying to stir the pot or push my car sale, but I still think the best deal is an early 996 with a new factory motor. I've got a couple of thousand miles on my new Suncoast factory motor and I have not been able to sell the car for $27K! My original engine went around 90K miles and it was a daily driver. It's still a bit of a gamble (and beware of the cheap rebuilds like MotorMeister). It's hard to put a dollar amount on piece of mind when it comes to your 911. Whatever you get though, you're gonna love it. 996's are wonderful!

That is a great decision to learn how to drive a manual. It is actually easier to drive a manual with a more powerful car vs a small 4 banger. You are going to love it.

I used to like tan interiors, until a friend of mine, that is very knowledgeable in cars
told me that the lighter interior colours do not age as well as the darker colours.

Whites and tans will show all the wrinkles dirt and wear marks.
They also look older sooner.
