The only thing about this that is wierd to me, is that he could have just flown out a technician to do it at his home, rather than shipping his car away. Even if I was a billionaire, I'd rather just send the technician to me because it would be faster and I would have my car ready to go much quicker.
I have some pretty F'd up stories with those guys. I give you 2 real life examples:
1- I was on my boat in portofino about to dock to get some gas at the pump when two 150feet long yatchs were trying to dock as well and obviously one was there before the other. The Italian yatch docked first while he should have waited his turn . The Sheik who had the other yatch got pissed, just crush his yatch against the italian's and went back and forth 3 times until both yatchs were totally destroyed. I could not believe it!! I would think yatchs like those would fetch in the $6/7MM a piece
2- A friend of mine who is a managing partner at Deloitte in Abu Dabi told me one of his team was hired by a sheik to perform a physical inventory of his car collection. Given the amount of cars he had, the associate had to go at the local DMV to see the list of vehicles registered under the Sheik's name, and he got over 1500 results... As you can imagine that none of those cars were Toyotas.

This is a retarded statement. What sort of "effort" is he making? Sounds like he's just wasting time and fuel. No one is criticizing him for driving the car, so your first sentence has no relevance. It's the irrationality of his decision that is pissing ppl off. He basically did it to show off his money and get his name in the press, so don't try to justify his actions any other way. I thought your post was a joke at first, but I guess not.

That jet was going to fly at some point regardless of whether the car needed a tune-up or not. Engines need to be more efficient and any source of pollution needs to be cleaned up but for anyone to judge a person as wasteful simply because they choose to spend their wealth as oppose to hording it seems rediculous to me.

The way the media works, he probably returned the car for what he perseived to be a major issue. The mechanics drained the oil to check for contaminants or it had to be drained to investigate the complaint. They found nothing; replaced the oil; told the guy he was causing his own problems; charged him for the service and left him on the hook for the freight.

Most of the time if noone can do service in their country they will fly factory tech in. Just like someone stated before. I know that, it is a fact. Rolls Royce does that. When arabs buy Phantoms, they buy them straight from Goodwood, then drive them to London airport, load them on transport planes and fly them to their countries. These guys deal directly with factory. But that is what happens when you buy cars like that. It is very personal relationship with clients. Plus their cars are so loaded with so many extra custom features, it's amazing. RR is happy to do that and clients like that are very important for them.
So I don't find that so out of ordinary at all. Our dependence on oil made them very wealthy.
