sell/trade my car in with the hardtop or not?
Okay, for business reasons I need to turn my precious 911 into cash this week. I've got a '99 6sp, light grey full leather int, 56k and the best/worst part is the car is special order Wimbledon green. I LOVE my car and it's color and I'm pretty pissed off I need to get rid of it because I'll never again find the same color combo. Porsche apparently only sprayed one of these a month, max and so it looks like I'm going to have to just order a new one when the time comes.
My question - I'm most likely going to let a dealer have it as a trade in towards nothing because I need it to go away. Should I let them know there's a hard top that goes with it, potentially netting myself no extra money for it and loosing it, or not say anything about it at all and just put the hardtop on ebay?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

YB,
The eBay value of hardtops is pretty lean, especially for one that the buyer would almost certainly have to paint. The cost of shipping and crating these things is also very high. If you were to sell, you'd probably have a lot better luck once the weather turned cooler.
If it were my hardtop, I'd get a quote from the dealer for the vehicle "as it sits" and then inquire about how much value the hardtop would add. Since it sounds like you're purchasing a car from them, they'll likely give you something - even if it's minimal. What you could do is price the difference with and without hardtop on Edmunds or some similar site and try to get that on the tradein.
Having said all that, I've got a hardtop sitting unused in my basement that will likely never see the light of day again. I purchased mine on eBay for not much and transportation was a pain. Needless to say, I wouldn't do it again. IMO, i's not worth the trouble of the auction and shipping for just a couple hundred bucks. Besides, the guy that ultimately buys your car would have a really hard time replacing your hardtop should he get the irrational urge like I did. Even if I didn't get much of anything for it, I'd include it in the deal...
Good luck,
Tonger

You're probably right, ebay does sound like a pain. I've got an ad on craigslist and I need to take it over to the local dealer and carmax to see what they'll give me for it. I'm just scared of what I'll hear.

Dealer told me $25k. I AM going to try and sell it for a week or 2. $25k is ridiculous. I wish there was just a pawn shop for Porsche's somewhere. I'd buy my own car back in a heartbeat in 6 months.

For a '99 C2 with the base rims and 56k miles? To be honest, I'm surprised that a dealer offered you that much...that's about as much as I'd expect for my '99 C4 with 50k miles and a reman engine...

The blue book on it for private party is 28.5 and trade in is 23k. I know they bumped it up a little because they might be selling me another car but still... Having a unique color isn't getting me anything extra when I'm selling it but when I'm ready for a 997 it's going to be Cobalt Blue. How much would you like to bet that when you're doing the buying instead of selling a unique color will be worth more? Just my guess. I've been wrong before...

Although I've the same "unique" color and love it, I believe it's almost too unique to help resale. The dealer needs to turn around every car as fast as possible and can't risk to sit on it over winter. Sure, there might be a buyer like you that appreciates Wimbledon green; therefore put the car on ebay. That's the best chance to find this buyer that wants to pay a premium rather than a discount for our color.

FWIW,
My hardtop was not included with the insurance total on my '99 cab (it was not on the car at the time of the accident). The paperwork shows that the insurance company would have given me about $400 for the hardtop, had it been included. As a result, I have a beautiful arctic silver hardtop in a nice soft cover sitting in my basement, far away from civilization. Shipping is a nightmare. Just moving the damn thing out of the basement is a nightmare.
My advice: get rid of the top with the car - ask the dealer to plus-up their offer by a few hundred bucks.
Just as a point of information, they valued my '99 C2 cab with 81,000 miles at $31,699. That's based on retail pricing in my area (replacement cost), with a bonus for excellent condition.

I should have taken the money. I've got bigger problems now. Rear cab window has separated from the canvas at the bottom. Unglued and Apparently it's "burned in" somehow from what the dealer told me and what I've read from searching here. There's some jig which could fix it instead of replacing in but they of course don't have it. Get this - are all you other cab owners listening?? They want $6,000 to replace the top. This is my West Palm Beach dealer. Time to start googling after market cab tops in Boca....
