What could a PPI do to detect this 2nd gear problem that a good test drive wouldn't do? Is the PPI inspector going to take the transmission apart??
IMHO, a PPI is a good guess at best (and, yes, I did get one before I bought my 996).
Seems that in this case, a lengthy test drive would have revealed a problem that no in-garage, on-lift PPI would have.

He did get a PPI from the Baker Porsche. Just goes to show how useless a dealer inspection can be. Frankly, he'd have been better off studying Rennlist to find out that 2nd gear pop out is common and to be vigilant.

the GT3 and GT2 have steel synchro's which are stronger (also the GT2 tranny has some extra cooling compared to the turbo one).
different synchro material is my guess as to the source of the issue.
