the 997 ones are the cheap ones...the 996 standard units are still really expensive. The pricing makes no sense really...none of them should cost as much as they do other than the 997 GT3 units. I think I paid $18.00 for the pair through even my local dealer.

already 1 step ahead ... I've got one set on the car, and 2 spare sets for unforseen "off track" incidents ... fortunately I've yet to need the extra, but at this price, they are one of the cheapest track and brake improvements you can do ...

A member on PPBB ran a 997 gt3 brake duct on one side on a (base) 986 and left a 986/996 brake duct on the other side.......the rotor w/ the 997 gt3 brake duct ran +5 degrees warmer...........perhaps the 986 rotors were too small to benefit from the larger duct?!
Has anyone actually measured the temp. of their brakes w/ the 997 gt3 brake duct on one side and the 996 on the other?

A member on PPBB ran a 997 gt3 brake duct on one side on a (base) 986 and left a 986/996 brake duct on the other side.......the rotor w/ the 997 gt3 brake duct ran +5 degrees warmer...........perhaps the 986 rotors were too small to benefit from the larger duct?!

That would make sense. I noticed that the 997 duct is not that much larger but it is shaped differently. This funnels the air into a direction towards the brakes. The position of the brake ducts may not be the same on a 986 as it is on a 997 so it actually could be funneling the air into the wrong area which would then mean you will actually have higher temps.

So even if the are the 996 and 986 part numbers are the same doesn't mean that they are in the exact same location as each other. I wouldn't know unless you have wind tunnel stats.
I am not saying that even for a 996 that the 997 gt3 ducts are properly aligned. It would be a great if some one could measure the temps for each and post the data.

Yes they are. These devices are extremely simple. They just collect air flowing under the car at speed and direct it toward the brakes.
The larger ducts simply collect more air than the smaller ones. The 986 ducts are the same as the 996 ducts because the front of these cars and the front suspension and braking systems are all very similar. I really don't see how the smaller ducts could perform better. If they did, why would Porsche waste time and effort creating the bigger models?
That makes absolutely no sense, IMHO.

Well It doesn't make any sense if the 986 that is running the gt3 duct on one side is having higher temps recorded then standard the duct on the other side. My only explanation would be that the gt3 ducts have to be directing the air into the wrong place or that the temp readings are wrong.

Larger yes, but the profile on these seems (at least from the pictures provided thus far) different and would channel the air to different spots? Like a fan that is pointed in not quite the right spot... Might be good to get some top-down photos to see where the air is directed.

- The pictures I posted were for 996 brake ducts, but the post that refers to a temperature difference claims use of a 997 duct. I have not seen that duct so it's hard to comment on it's use in a 996 or 986 (whose front suspensions and brakes are very similar).
- If you have ever measured the temps Porsche brake rotors achieve on a track you'll know they get big time hot (I measure my tire and brake temps with a digital heat sensor with a laser sight). 5 degrees difference from one side to the other is a very small variation. I have seen much larger variations caused by the orientation of the track (depending on if it has mostly right turns, mostly left turns, how fast each of the respective corners are, and how long the straight is between turns, how long each corner is, etc). All of these previously mentioned factors could play a roll in brake temps. As a result it is hard to draw conclusions from a mere 5 degree difference without more info.
- When I looked at the ducts in my cars (I have used all three in my cars at various times) they all appear to direct air to about the same location. Which makes a lot of sense since Porsche obviously tested them before they created the (very expensive) injection molding "tools".

Just from the one quick results someone posted the rotor on the 997 gt3 brake duct ran +5 degrees hotter then the base 996/986 duct on a base Boxster.
That was just one case. Just from what I've seen(although it was a controlled repeated study) it didn't look great.
I'm curious is anyone here has actually tested anything with a digital heat sensor(like Ray S was referring to)
Trust me,I want this to work as much as everyone else. Come on improved braking capabilities for $20? How can someone pass that up?
