I have a 00 996 that I considering purchasing the cupholders and moving the climate control down to the bottom storage bin. I'm wondering whether any other pieces are needed to make the bottom fit. If anyone has pics, could you post them so I can get an idea of how it would look. thanks
I just did this a couple of weeks ago. The cupholders (bought from a lister) came with two pieces that allow the holder to be fastened to the empty bin previously occupied by the climate control, as well as with a surround trim piece. The climate control head fits easily into the bottom. The set also came with a new surround, fitting the shape of the lower bin. The hardest part is threading the AC harnesses to the bottom. The whole thing takes about an hour. Here is a (not so good) picture. you get the idea.
How strong are those cupholders? I usually have a fast-food cup, and they've always looked kinda flimsy to me.
pretty strong. they look the same as the cupholders on my old A4, but smaller. as my audi salesman said, "they're the most over engineered cupholders in the business."
the one's on my 996 are big enough to hold a "tall" cup from starbucks.
They are pretty solid. My only complaint is that when the mechanism pops out, it is not very tall. I sometimes put my hand on the cup or water bottle when taking a turn.
There's a very nice looking cupholder that I would get if I had the Mk1 (those Mk1 holders are just like the Audi dash mounted unit, which drives me nuts)
The oem cupholders seem to be made for cans really as they do better than to-go cups or water bottles. The to-go cups or water bottles need to be babied when taking turns (use your other hand to hold the top) so they do not fall over, or take turns slowly.

The cup holders are strong to hold pretty much anything, but the vibration of the suspension would pretty much spill anything. So for the morning starbucks I still hold the coffee in my hand.....
You know, after giving this some additional thought, the time I'd REALLY like the cupholders is on long Interstate drives, where I tend to drink a lot of Red Bull, usually the medium-sized cans. Those skinny cans won't rattle around too much, will they?
Thanks for those DIY pics. I want to move my stereo to the lower deck and wasn't sure how to get at the A/C controls for better access. Those pics will do the trick.
