A discussion came up about the fastest way to launch a 996 tiptronic...any ideas (tricks)?

Foot brake the car - bring the RPMs up to about 1200 while holding the brakes firmly (this is about all the RPM I could get before pushing the front tires)followed by nailing the throttle while releasing the brake at the same time. That technique shaved 2-tenths off my time vs stomping from dead idle at the drag strip.

Well, you start with the transmission at the edge of a large cliff...

Rev the car to 7000 rpm and go from Park to Drive. If it holds togeather you can probably shave off another 2/10 of a sec. just kidding!

Please make sure to replace the RMS before launching off the Aircraft carrier. Wouldnt want to harm the poor fishies
All in fun, I hope you 996 guys realize this.......

I had a 99 tiptronic 996 that I sold a few months ago. I did a lot of runs with the G-tech performance meter, to see what the fastest launch technique was. Ditto on what Tippy said. In addition, after launching in the manual mode (first gear), slap the shifter back over into auto mode. Mine would shift at a higher rpm in auto mode versus manual shifting. Make sure your A/C and traction control (if it is available on a tip) are turned off.

at a stop light, i noted that even in Auto tiptronic mode, if you click the steering wheel button to move from 2nd to 1st gear, it stays on 1st gear (beyond the few seconds) until the car starts moving (or at least in my test at a red light which lasted a minute or two).

Best launch. Run in to a 7-11 in a shady part of town, leave it running. As it drives off make a mental note to your self that it still ain't that quick even when someone "driving it like it was stolen" and then use the insurance money to buy a manual.

Hold car in your throwing hand at about shoulder height. Ensure nothing is in the path. Launch with a smooth throw giving the car a slightly nose up attitude.
