Default Cold Air kit, What Brand? Does it matter?

Hi all,

I am not starting this thread to debate how effective or ineffective this part is, Thats been beat to death.
I have one question.
Does it really matter if I get an Fabspeed, Schnell, Evo..whatever?
Are they all about the same, we are just talking about a hose and a plug correct?

Thanks!

Marc,

The consensus seems to be that EVO's is a better product. It is also the most expensive.

I have the first gen of this and pictured is the second generation. the sound at WOT is great and that is about all its good for. Performance is highly debatable.

Sound is worth it on the fabspeed. I gots one and it is all of that floored @ arount 4500 rpm
I chose it simply because of the no real hp gain and prefer the look/price of it (like the stock look better)
BTW, I'm running the stock air filter and the plastic intake screen to avoid any possible issues.
The ratio of risk vs performance gain is not enough or worth it for me.
Could not hear any change in sound with or without screen. The key is the intake muffler removal, the orange cap thing

But the question remains, are all the ones like the Fabspeed essentially the same part? And I kind of like the stock look and filter as well.

Default Another alternative

I went down to Home Depot, got a piece of flexible pipe/hose for $5 and made a Fabspeed knockoff. It sounds just like the fabpseed mod, works just fine.

Questions...
Is this part a huge cosmetic concern? I keep my trunk closed 99.9% of the time.

What kind of noise does this put out? I have MKII muffler mod. already, video clip anywhere with sound?

With schnell, yes and about $100 less. They also have the muffler "cap".
I like the red fabspeed as well as the carbon fiber looking cap better.
I also found a used one at pelican parts for $100, made it easy for me.

EVOMS has my vote

-Best looking, best quality
-Least amount of issues reported

Debating over sound is silly because no one's yet done up a back to back to back comparison taking notes on sound. I will say that the EVOMS positively howls at WOT upper RPMs and is not noticeable at any other time.

hp/tq boost wise... again, no one's done a back to back to back real world test on these and even on a dyno, tough to get the wind ram effect with those weak **** fans at the shops.

Good question. Don't know if one could hear it so well with performance/louder mufflers.
Since it is an intake sound improvement I would imagine the combination of having both would be slightly better from within the cab.
If I had bought/moded the mufflers first, I probably would not have messed with getting a CAI.
It was just a cheap/easy way to get that sound. At the time I thought and hoped it would be all I needed to satisfy my need for that better sound. What it did is fuel my desire for more

the evoms easily drowns out any engine noise or exhaust noise at WOT at the upper band of the rev band.

i have the factory PSE cans and you can hear it on the lower end of cruising along, but the exhaust noise is drowned out again when you're going WOT right at about 5.5-7K RPM?

you simply won't hear intake noise period anywhere else or it's jus too hard to detect which is fine by me. i'd rather hear the PSE at work. brap.

sure cosmetics count. wtf would you ever discount that? do u want to spend money on an ugly pos?

evoms is it baby!

Me too.

The sound when wide-open is great. I can hear both the intake and exhaust at WOT. It sounds like a banshee exploding out of the gates of hell. But in a good way.
