Default Is a 996 faster than a 993?

Just bought my first tiptronic 996 yesterday after selling my manual 993. Seems a lot slower, is that because I haven't adjusted to the transmission (or it hasn't adjusted to me?) or is the 996 a slower car? Is there any way to make it take off in first gear instead of second gear? Also, the temperature has been right at 180 consistently but in traffic yesterday, it got up to 190 and the fan clutch kicked on (it was only about 60 degress outside). I was wondering if this is typical 996 behavior or if I should change the thermostat? Thank you.

The Tip is a tad slower than a manual 993 in acceleration. If you stomp the gas pedal, the trans drops into first automatically or you can hit the switch on the steering wheel that has the negative sign. Yes, these cars run hot, nature of the design and EPA regs.

Apples to Apples a 996 is faster than a similar 993 in every way...now a 996 Tip vs a 993 manual 993 is probably faster....the early tips were not that fast...but it is faster than a 993 tip....

A 996 is faster in every way except to sell.

Ah, good to know, thanks. It's got about 70k, i am thinking oil (10w30), air filter, fuel filter and coolant flush. is there anything i am missing? can i wait on the plugs? is the tranny lifetime or serviceable?

p.s.(do i drain the coolant from the front or back? can i use the standard green coolant?) thanks again.

The tranny needs to be serviced....I would go to the nearest dealer and get the maintenance schedule for the car. This will tell you what needs to changed and at what intervals. 60K was a MAJOR service...make sure it had that done..it replaces the serpentine belt and if that fails...it could do MAJOR damage to the engine.

Consult the owner's manual for oil viscosity specs for your car and consider using Porsche antifreeze (even though some owners feel that there are equivalent products).

Good luck with your car!

P.S. The 996 is superior to the 993 in just about every way.

Service schedule states that the polyrib belt needs to get changed every 60k and inspected every 30k. It won't do "MAJOR" damage to your engine if it fails... but it could trash your alternator in a worst case scenario.... Either way you should look after it when called for.

yeah, it's not bad. I just took it out in the rain and it's pretty fun. I believe the 60k service was done as the serpentine belt is in good shape, looks like it has 10k on it, engine is dry, oil is clean. totally unmolested, plain, stock, no tints, orange blinkers, original paint, immaculate interior, no idiot lights on... i think i got a good deal at $20k. i sold my '95 cab with 100k miles for $24k. it's definately a buyers market for the 996 now.

Had both 993 and 996 at the same time.

996 Definitely faster in every aspect.

Dirty secret about market pricing: Enthusiast forums always undervalue their cars. They know too much. If I was buying, I'd buy on Rennlist for sure. If I was selling, I prolly wouldn't even tell you guys until the deal was done.
