Ben,

You have lost sight of the air cooled histoy of the 911. For the time - one hell of a car that many will not forget. Be careful where you eat!

There's not much defense for owning a Porsche if you don't have some heart for the heritage of it. As many - you included - have pointed out, it's an awkward, essentially flawed way to go fast in a car, mitigated only by stubborn and creative engineering. The only reason to preserve this car is because of what it stands for. The sheer audacity of it.

If you don't love that, all that's left is the status badge, no?

That's why I chuckle when people pooh-pooh the 996 for being 'mass produced'. The Ford plant I worked at as a kid in the seventies turned out 60 cars per hour, three shifts a day... 1200 cars a day at peak production in the summer, allowing for breaks and shift changes. And there were no 'work stations'. The car went by on the line, and you had 54 seconds to get your job done.

pls, bruce. the 911 drives great period heritage or no heritage.

give me some credit. yes, for me there's better. the 911 is just yet another stepping stone for me for now. a nice stepping stone at that.

i can respect the 993 and the 911 history for the reasons you summarized above, but i'm not going to get moist like some of you gents watching some porsche funded video and pretend these dated cars are lust worthy because of the way they did it in the ol' days. i guess i just can't relate, but yet at the same time i can?

the badge counts. so does the drive.
