does anyone know how long it takes to build a p-car from start to finish? my computer speakers are on the way out and could not hear if it was stated on the video. i saw an episode of ultimate factories on the making of the new 599 ferrari. from start to finish it takes the factory approximately three months to complete one car. the level of hand craftsmanship and quality control is amazing. the ferrari factory has its own foundry where they cast the engine block and other engine components.

on the other hand i saw a similar episode on the making of the chevrolet corvette and it takes approximately two weeks to complete.

u know what, bud, i rarely laugh out loud even if i type out lol esp when reading ****.... but i gotta say i really did laugh out loud here

"As far as I know they are made by hand on a small mountain top in Germany. After each one is built they ring a giant bell on top of the mountain and pull it down by donkey to the local village where they celebrate all through the night with dance, song and plenty o' stein filled with hops.

After the festivities a local priest blesses each one on its journey to it's new home, and it's loaded into a giant sheepskin lined case and sent to America for a new start.

I believe this whole process takes about a year for each car... I'm trying to verify this."

There is actually a parade for each vehicle!

In reality - the test drive of each car, as it leaves the factory, is a special privilage given as a reward to some of the plant workers. It's entertaining to wach the new P Cars being birthed. There used to be a "cafe" where you could sit and watch but there is so much construction around the factory that is all gone now.

Thanks for the post. I was at the factory in October and watched that in person and it was fascinating. Saw the turbo being built next to a typical 997 engine and the differences were insane. Every engine is also signed off by one responsible mechanic who is ultimately held responsible and his name is linked to that engine forever. It is watching the birth at the mothership. They produce 160 cars per day at this plant. Every Porsche owner should go visit! The new Porsche Museum is under construction too which is going to be really cool.

Thanks for posting the cool video clip. I'd love to visit in person the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen someday.

Did anyone recognize the Narrator's voice? He had a show on Speed a while back with another guy, they were always horsing around, reviewing cars, they did a great piece on a C4 in the snow a couple years ago.

Anyway, I met him at Laguna Seca in October, he was the track announcer for the ALMS race weekend.
I saw him in the paddock and started chatting with him.
-- Funny that he said he had just gotten back from Germany doing some documentary for Speed, but I didn't get the details.
I guess this is what he was talking about -- cool.

I still can't remember his name, anyone remember?

You are welcome.
I just got back from work, and I am glad it went through,
and you saw the clip.

I just EDITED the original post.

As soon as I started seeing the Porsche Factory, I thought you guys would enjoy it,
so I recorded it and later imported to the laptop and then to Google video.

However, Google stepped the video quality down by a huge amount. The original video is 40 MB.

BluesCast thanks for helping.

Thanks John, was that the name of the show (?), maybe you know the guy's name, maybe Tom something?

Here's a pic from Laguna Seca with him on the left.
He had just returned from Germany filming this show I guess.

(my 5yo boy took the picture which is why he's laughing, he's a funny guy, Canadian.)

Meister
Yes, that is one of the guys.
Maybe the other one is the other guy behind in the picture,
opening the trailer to take out the P car

There ya go, thanks Tim.
http://dreamcargarage.com/about_us.htm

The guy's name is Tom Hnatiw, no wonder I couldn't remember his last name, ha.

Back on topic, I remember an old Porsche commercial maybe about 1990 that made fun of other carmakers using robots and showed hand assembly of the interior and panels.

I wonder if Porsche will still be hand-assembling the new Cayenne hybrid motors?
