Sorry, I have been out on business. I have not had chance to drop the car off at the mechanic yet. I have driven it twice around the block and to run an arron. Car seems like nothing ever happened. I am a little nervous after reading some of these threads. I will advise as soon as I ger the computer readout.

if you are lucky, maybe the catalytic converter packing came loose. Now it's wedged in again and no noise. Cats are emissions and have longer federal warranty coverage.

If it is the Cat(s) they will be warrantied. Emission components are covered for 8 years.

So what year is this car? If it is a CAT baffle that is loose it is not warranty unless it makes the CEL go on!! Noise from the CAT is not under the warranty, only emission issues.

I had similar issues on my 99 996 at 73k miles. Terrible noise on the freeway that would sometimes go quiet... took it home, and no leaks or other visual stuff showing. Restarted the car and it was much quieter... ended up driving it to my brothers dealership and the noise was almost gone as I pulled up. Very strange...

There was never a CEL light or leak on this motor. But, I had them check the oil filter and coolant tank...SURPRISE! Oil filter was filled with metal particles. Ended up being an intermediate shaft failure and the motor was replaced with a Porsche remanufactured engine that came with a 2 year warranty and everything new bolted on except for an AC compressor. Somewhat happy ending I guess.

That's the 996 Dictionary's definition of happy?

Happy [adj.] The feeling a 996 owner gets when he replaces his blown motor with a remanufactured motor that almost bolts up to everything.

Too funny...

Do you think there is any chance of this being a minor issue? also dose anyone know of any good Porsche mechanics in Miami?

Thanks in advance
My 40th Anniversary would do this occasionally, but only on hot days and only about once every 100 starts (rough estimate). The tach would read very low revs. I would immediately turn the engine off and then restart it, and it would run fine. One time I decided to let it continue to see what would happen; it took about 3-4 seconds before the engine smoothed out, revs went to idle speed. I figured it was some strange ECU inability to instruct the engine properly, but I always wondered about it and mentioned it to the dealer when I took it in for service.

At 30k miles (about a month ago), my intermediate shaft failed while the car was idling after a 20 mile drive at freeway speeds and some very mild stop and go driving after exiting the expressway. At the dealer, I again mentioned the strange behavior the car had displayed over the years. The service manager noted it, I suppose for Porsche's database. Anyway, I've always wondered about that rough starting.

Good luck. Hope it works out for you.
