Someone aked me this the other day and I didn't have an answer. Why are all the 911's (other than the Targa, Turbo, GT2/3) called Carrera?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carrera is a trademarked name (Spanish for "race") exclusively used by Porsche for its models to honor the company's success in the Carrera Panamericana race.

The following vehicles have been called Carrera:

* Porsche 356
* Porsche 904
* Porsche 911
o 911 (1963-1989)
o 964 (1989-1993)
o 993 (1993-1998)
o 996 (1998-2004)
o 997 (2004-Present)
* Porsche 924
* Porsche Carrera GT

i ran the modern La Carrera Panamericana on a motorcycle a few years ago fantastic time..

"Carrera" is Spanish for race, in the sense of rush, or hurry

Carrera became the designation for the street 911 with the introduction of the 200 hp 3.2 liter motor in 1984.

The SC from '78-'83 stood for Super Carrera.

Before that Carrera was reserved for super performance versions only.

Actually not true, but a common misconception. Or should I say, it stood for that on some internet boards decades after the car was produced, but never by Porsche in any sales literature or elsewhere.

The rest of your reply is on the money, though!

I've always heard Super Carrera, though it was never called that, or marketed as Super Carrera by Porsche themselves. Maybe that's the misconsemption, the fact Porsche didn't outright call it that. Just a guess.

Yes it has --

--->Porsche UK Link<---

--->The Same Page in German<---

As a side note, the last of the 356s were referred to as SC.

The first 911 to have the designation SC was the '73 Carrera RS.

Well, I stand corrected. I must say that this is the first I've ever seen of this in a lifetime of collecting Porsche literature and following the cars, (worked at dealer in '80s as well, but slightly after the SC model). I do not recall Porsche ever using that designation in any sales literature or advertisements back then, can anyone correct me on this? TIA.
