Default Who has painted their rotor hats????

I'm thinking about doing this, as I bought zimmerman rotors for the front, not knowing that the hats have no corrossion protection (so yes, my rotor hats are now a deep orange).

I know folks have painted these, but I'm curious how the paint has held up? I painted my calipers with great results, but I'd imagine the rotor hats get much hotter than the calipers.

If you have painted your hats, I'd love to know the color, type/brand of paint, whether you track the car, how long they have been painted, and how they are holding up. Thanks!

Oh yea....

I just got some sandpaper, primer and high-temp silver paint from Autozone. No need to do anything radical here. The old paint sands off very easily. Prime, paint...

That overspray on the rotor face will come right off the first time you hit the brakes.

Powdercoat, kits are cheap out there. Eastwood company comes to mind.

I'm surprised that you did this without taking off the rotors - how much masking of the car did you have to do?

I did the exact same as Charles. Take the wheel off, shoot the rotor down with brake cleaner, mask the caliper, and spray the hats. I used cast iron gray krylon. You dont have to mask the car at all. The overspray on the rotor will just rub right off. I would do powdercoat the next time for more strength.

Cool! Thanks - this job is on my to-do list, but I was too lazy to remove the calipers to take off the rotors.

Actually I lied, I didnt mask the rotors. Just placed a piece of cardboad between the hat and the caliper. I too am lazy.

Thanks to those who have responded. As for the durability...how is the paint holding up? That is my big concern at this point. Tippy, did you do black or silver. I'm torn at this point because silver looks good, but black wouldn't show dust.

I did cast iron gray or is it grey? It has held up a couple a years but it is showing slight rust in some spots. It really needs to be treated with a rust inhibitor like ospho or similar product to kill the rust before the paint. I would do a powdercoat job next time.

The look is a huge improvement and will go on my lengthy to do list, thanks for a other good idea.

Mine's were done in black which a must if you have wheels with black centers.

Dealers have been doing this for years. 996 rotor hats rust, period. So rather than take warranty claims and replace the rotors, Porsche instructed the dealers to knock down the rust, paint with high temp, and march on. Works fine. Black, Silver, no matter....it seals things up enough to prevent a nastier rust bucket look.

Awesome guys. Now I'm just torn on the color. I kind of agree with Ben (did I just say that?) that black might look funny, given my silver open-design 5-spoke wheels (If I had black wheels it would be a no brainer). Maybe I can get some of the high temp paint in more of a grey, something in between silver and black. Thanks again guys!
