I was quoted $700 for replacing the rear plastic cab window.
Anybody have an idea what it should cost?
I have seen prices much lower and was really surprised.

What my old Miata buddies used to do was to buy the plastic rear window, then take it to a reputable upholstery shop to have it installed. It was always significantly less than having a stealer do it.

you can buy a complete new canvas with plastic window for 550....google it

+1 on that option. A few years back I paid to have my sister's Toyota plastic rear window replaced by an auto upholstry shop. The bill was $200, including the plastic.

For another grand ( plus install ) you can get a new top w/a glass window.

Factory canvas and window plus install is going to run serious cash. $2K plus (install).

The window is not cheap and has to be "burned" in. I would just find an upholstery shop that works on CAB's and have it sewn in.

I just had the top and window replaced. New OEM top and rear window, plastic installed by the dealer (most won't touch the window "melt in", it takes a special tool, and is a b!tch)). Had the best in the area do it and my old 6 yr old factory window was much better, the plastic and the install, and the total was closer to 4k.

Closer to 4K? Somebody got taken then. At 3K I felt I was taken but I only had the factory option since the GAHH glass window option wasn't available yet.

Like I said, 2K plus install ($1K).

Yes, it was almost 4k, but it was my insurance paying, and a long, long story of fighting. This was for the OEM top, install, rear window, and rear window install - which the trim place wanted nothing to do with. I went to the best trim shop for the canvas install, then to the the best dealer for the window, I even waited an extra week to have the "right" person (with experience) do the window. Best price on an afermarket top and install out here is around 2100 (for German canvas). Few places out here would touch the OEM rear window install, so it had to be done at a dealer, and yes, it was ridiculous. There was only one dealer that had done enough to make me comfortable. 2K plus $1100 install was the cost, not including the rear window, which was around 700.

I saw a dealer tech doing one of the "Burn ins". Requires a jig which Porsche owns in order to get the window tight enough to stand up to 170 mph forces. The micro zippers on both sides are really something, too! It was lots more complicated then it looked.

Don't know if an upholstery shop or a self install would give you the long term, high speed reliability. For US highway speeds (80 mph or so) it may be fine.

Sure, it's been a couple years but I'd hope that I would get more than 7 years a out of 2 windows.

Maybe you should consider upgrading to the GAHH glass rear window this time around. I think your wife is worth the extra expense, don't you?

Thought about that Tim but the top itself (canvas) is immaculate and the plastic window is in perfect shape (clarity, etc.) except for the small section (about 1-2 inches) that has separated. Luckily it's on the top and not the sides or bottom.

FYI....IIRC the glass top option requires buying a complete assembly (canvas and top).

Time to break out the Gorilla Glue!

Hmm, my Boxster is still on the original window. It's 7 years old and it still looks great.

Do you do "the chop"? If not it might help.
