Why are you banging your head? Porsche designed it this way. Audi and BMW I'm told are the same way. The only reason someone would want them both to light is so they can run them both when not needed. If you wanted to run them for safety, you would run them (it) as designed. I don't know where the story that it is US cars only and for liability came from.

The fog lights are like that on most european cars, but maybe not british cars. I believe they only illuminate one side so that those acustomed to vehicles with rear lights (european drivers) will know the orientation of the vehicle as they aproach it from behind in the fog. All cars with rear fogs are only on the left side so if you plan to over take them you know which side is the side to pass. If you pass to the right of the light you will run ito their right side. It is only the past 8- 10 years that cars in the U.S. have been having the rear fogs but Euro cars have had them since the 70's. Drove lots of bmw's and mercedes when in the service in Germany that had them (also only on the left side).

Only when the headlights are on can you pull the **** out a 2nd "click" and to turn on the rear fog lights. This will be indicated by an amber light to the left of the light switch, (below the green light noted above). NOTE: you can not turn on the rear fog lights if you have just the parking lights on.

leave it on one side, its meant as an indicator of where your car is in the fog if another car wants to pass you (pass on the left US, pass on the right, country with left lane drive). That was the idea anyway.

"what if it's foggy on the right side" common... that's funny.

As far as humor goes, the right side gag is hilarious no matter which side of the argument you are on!

I've done the red on one side, green on the opposite side hack. That way I'm sure all cars and boats are lined up right on my tail. In fog I just feel safer in a group.
Red and green - stay between.
