lol to clarify, what i'm saying is... there's too much hype. the cayman is nice, but it's not better than a base carrera, even a 996.
even when i got back into my slow4S, i didn't feel that big of a let down compaerd to the 997TT because basically the feel is the same save for the mad power. the skin is about the same. the lag is still there. it's insanely fast. it's insanely smooth. it's kinda boring.
i still need to flog a gt3 to see if that's where it's at else i need to start looking at a ferrari.

I have quite a few track laps in my GF's Cayman S and thousands of track miles in a 996. As I've said before, the Cayman is the car Porsche should be developing as it's top end sports car. The 911 variants should be evolved into GT cars for guys that want to say they have a 911. The Cayman is a damn fine sports car.
As for the turbo, I hate them on the track. It's like driving a tank with a jet engine.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I don't have a chance to drive all the cars you guys do, but you have to admit this is pretty funny.

I drove the Cayman while 996 shopping last year and I thought it was stunning. Very connected, plenty power for the average driver like me......
However, I had to go for the extra two seats, the money for an optioned new one easily takes you into 911 territory and in the end, given the choice between a Cayman or a 911 for the same money was not a decision I lingered over........

Ive always said that the 911 rear engine placement design is on borrowed time. Porsche can make powerful, reliable engines... but they have to put electronics in place to aid the driver because of the rear engine layout. In a way, its counter productive...
The problem with the cayman is that it wasnt designed to be the best it could be... shame on porsche!

I drove a base Cayman against a 997 C2 autocross and at Lime Rock and even to me, a track virgin, it was instantly apparent how Porsche had created a car for the marketing dept.. In the corners the Cayman was more nimble, stable and forgiving than it's older brother. But of course the engine was rubbish. The power-weight ratio is the 997's advantage.
By way of analogy, the Cayman is like a Bic disposable razor and the 997 is like a straight razor. Used properly both get the job done, but the 997 is a little less forgiving of errors in unskilled hands.
With a 3.6 L NA 996, the power-weight ratio is about equal with a Cayman S, but the improvements in the clutch and shifter action, and throttle response would make me favor the newer car. I had a 2007 Boxter loaner recently and boy was it a let down to get back to the controls in my car. That loaner program is deadly, like handing out free crack.
What I want to know is how the new E90 M3 is going to stack up. On paper that thing is a monster.

smack, the E92 M3 is a monster on paper esp in the weight dept...
the already porky 996/997s and all the things you love about the Boxster and Cayman is attributable to their unporkiness which impacts everything (acceleration, braking, cornering, etc etc).
i love the M3 for what it is, but for driving fun, it pales in comparison to the 911/cayman/boxster.

There's something wrong here: who cares about the look on a GT3? This car was made to be driven not to stare...hehehe...there are many Ferrari guys in this board
