Mufflers can at least give you better sound & less weight.
I love it when the STI & Evo crowd talk about all the power they make. These are the same guys at the track that only do a few laps or sessions and then spend the bulk of their time with the hood up and/or under the car while I do lap after troublefree lap...

I can't speak for Evos, but my (stock) Sti was bullit-proof at the track and had a lot less little annoying issues than my 996. I think the trouble starts when people start modding the hell out of them.
