I rolled my fenders myself 2 years ago with a tool I rented. I was using a set of wheels that had too low an offset on the rear at the time, so the tires were rubbing. Still rubbed after I rolled them. It took a couple of hours to do, and I had not problems with the paint, you just have to be slow and careful. Try http://www.rollyourfender.com/ its where I rented the tools. However, the tool doesn't quite fit the bolt pattern on a 996, so it took some creativity to make it work.

I had my front fenders rolled on my Audi S4 about 2-3 years ago. The paint cracked all over the place and now there's some visible chipping outside one of the wheel wells - noticeable but not bad enough for me to fix. Modern German paint pretty much sucks - at least the sheetmetal is galvanized...
