Default Car alarm question - what does it take to set it off?

This may be a stupid question, but what does it take to set the car alarm off? My car alarm (stock) went off at 2AM the other morning. I've never accidentally triggered it. Tried opening the handles and bumping the car the next day and it did not go off. Car was parked outside at the time, so who knows if it was an animal or something else.

So... what type of screwing about sets off the alarm on one of these (2001 C4) cars?

They have infra red motion detectors inside the cabin. Was something in there moving? Where the windows open?

I've left the sunroof open and then dropped a package in the car through the roof on my way to the next store and it set it off.

I had a moth trapped in the car that set the alarm off in the wee hours.

Would a moth really trigger it? I could see that happening - a moth getting in there.
