It's my experience in other makes...the higher the mileage >90k, the higher the cost of yearly maintenance from wear and tear. Most of my cars are retired around 200k from a reliability factor.

We'll see how high the 996 will go, it's at 83k right now.

I just like to promote the idea that Porsche still makes high quality cars. Just because we have a few 996 engines go bad, doesn't make it unreliable. Truth is, many of the air-cooled engines on the road now have higher mileage because they are older, yes, but also because the non-surviving cars are long gone. I don't think the 996 is any less of a Porsche than any other and expect to find plenty of 100,000+ mile examples in the years to come. It will just take some time because it's still a newer car...
