I have a 2001 996 Coupe which I recently acquired and both doors have an interior rattle. It sounds metallic and is high up on both doors. The sound is most pronounced when I have a low idle engine rumble or when I turn up the bass on the stereo.
Any ideas? If I went searching, does anyone have any idea how to get the door panels off?
Mike, do a search on 'stereo installation' or 'stereo upgrade' here or over on RennTech. I remember reading quite a number of threads that showed pictures and detailed instructions of how they removed door panels to install their new door speakers.
mike- I have the exact same problem on my 01 C4 coupe. But for me it is only on my drivers door. It is the only rattle in the car. I'll be anxiously following this thread to see what arises.
Hi guys, It's really easy to pull the door panels off your car. It will take you about 10 minutes per side the first time. My car is at the body shop right now, so I can't take pictures. I had my driver's side off last week. If I recall correctly....You will need torx drives for your socket wrench. There are two torx drive screws under the handle cover(gently pry the cover off). There are a couple more screws (I think) under the cover for the door compartment. Once you remove the screws, gently pry the panel off with your fingers starting at the bottom. Once you have the panel off, you will have to hold it about six inches from the door while you disconnect two wires (the light on the bottom and one near the handle) and the cable for the handle. Let me know if you have problems and I can talk you through it. (916-941-6639) I'll have my car back in a few hours and I can take pictures if necessary.
Ooops, I forgot. There is a screw under the SRS badge (on the airbag cover).
Yeah, that little bugger is hidden pretty well!
Also, the little triangle with the mirror controls can be tricky, I think it slides out or something.
The rattle is most likely loose screws holding in the speaker. However, before taking apart the door, shoot some silicone in the door latch mechanism. There's a TSB on that somewhere...
Ditto to what was said above. I was thinking I'd surely find a loose speaker screw.
As it turns out, I had a loose screw holding the power window regulator.
You need to CUT OPEN the thin "foam" stuff to see this area where the regulator is. If you check the speaker screws and find they are tight, you may want to check the regulator screws too so you don't have to take everything apart again.
