Actually when an F1 engine lets go most of that is not "smoke", it is "steam" from the coolant as it makes contact with the glowing exhaust and other engine components. Either way, it is definitely spectacular.

Very true. It is spectacular. Most is steam but there is a host of other stuff that just "let go". I see that and all I can think is....."what the hell is that gonnna cost to fix"

I think the correct term for this anomaly is KA-BLAMMO

No kiddin'......I think yours is probably more appropriate. I think my POOF is the appetizer before the KA-BLAMMO

Seems that with the seperator, this smoke is understood and not nearly as bad. Just a byproduct of spraying.

actualy they smoke out the tail pipe, its simialr to pouring oil in the throttle body. we have to tow them into the shop fix them and tow them out of the shop so as not to smoke out the 300000 sq ft shop

Is your car a tip? - I think it's engine out for a tip...

I've seen $500 quoted for non-Tip 996

My 986 was around that $$$ as well, but easier to get to via the engine hatch.

Cavitation in the oil is a possible negative from leaving this un-fixed - apart from the oil spewing everywhere of course!!!!

Oh it is not too bad... their dealer just replaces it with a "remanufactured" engine!

Not much at all. It is just a PITA to get to since it is at a place on the engine as far forward as you can go on the top side. Serious PITA. I had mine done and it was $105 for the seperator and 1 hour of labor at $85. This was done at my Porsche indy back in Vegas. They are awesome!
