Tiptronic doesn't drop into first gear
Hi Guys, my first post in here. I have searched but turned up a blank. I hope someone can help?
I recently purchased a 25k mile, 1998 C2 Cabriolet for my GF. Whilst everything seems fine, I have noticed that in Drive, the box doesn't display G1 when stationary. It only drops into G2 on the display. If I switch to manual, I can downshift on the wheel into 1st gear.
Is this normal, or should I have it investigated further?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mark, the car will start at 2nd when you drive in auto mode.
If you need power, just floor the pedal at start, it'll drop to 1st.
That's the interesting character of the 996.

I thought the same when I bought mine. I was like, no wonder I got this car so cheap, then I read that they did this in an effort to make the car feel more luxurious because it will not jerk the car on acceleration from a stop.
The tranny (ZF 5HP-19) in 996s N/A are the same as BMW 3-series, Audi/VW 1.8Ts and some other lesser powered cars. Kind of scary that we put the most strain on them having the biggest and most powerful motors pushing them, not to mention the 996 is a heavier car.

this morning I drove with a nice Latte in one hand, roof down.....cruising......and in the lane next to me: a wonderful 6 speed 911 ..... he went from gear 1 to gear 2 and had to stop for the next traffic light..... Now repeat this about 10 times on a 15 mile trip along the PCH.....I LOVE MY TIP!!
