Thumbs up Air box...Amber Cube

This is photo of the engine air box before modification. Yes, I also don’t like the 3.6, looking for a modification the RUF there own silver strip and a silver block out for the oil tube. But the air box looks much better than the old one.

The attempt in this modification is to increase cold air flow. The 997 air box has a larger pipe into the air box. The air box itself has more volume. The red tube is also to remove air flow disturbances and the 4 ply silicon provides cooler temperature. All in all there the throttle is more responsive and the engine has a deeper sound. The 997 and 996 have the same air box bottom and tube intake.

To remove the amber cube I removed the turn signal bulb to gain access. I then us a drill to punch a hole in the cube. This allowed me to start to twist and break up the cube with a pair of needle nose pliers. The cube is not brittle, so the cube must be torn apart and removed. Try not to get little pieces inside the housing. Use a vacuum to suck out small pieces and quetips. You may have to gain assess to other bulbs if you are not able to get all the pieces. I have seen photos from RUF of 996 with this removed, looked great. I would highly recommend this modification.

Does the airbox make the 996 sound like the 997? I thought I read they that they really did a lot of work on it to make the engine sound better.
Is the airbox a simply plug n play installation?

I recently went to the fabspeed website and downloaded the 997 and 996 videos where. The 997 sound s fn great. Much better then the 996.

The 997 uses a different intake manafold to change the sound. Yes I would say plug and play. The air pump is a little tight on the outside air hose so I rotated it a couple of deg to the next drilled hole. This would be the bolt next to the out side air tube on the air pump. You may or may not need to do this. The pump will be touching the tube if you don't rotate it 5 deg.

I have Fabspeed mufflers and after market headers, so I am not sure how it would compare to other 996 or 997.

I'll admit, looking at the before and after images of the airbox, your new one looks much better than the original 996. Now just get rid of that 3.6!

I have seen a couple of different red silicon hoses around. From one vendor, they mention a differenct one for 996 then for 997. Which one did you use.

The factory 996 and 997 air intake hoses are identical.

AMBER LIGHT:

Ok, you will not have to adjust head lights. If your Porsche has not been in an accident the level indicators should be zero. This indicator is set at the factory and can not be easily changed. I reset my light unit to be flush with the body fenders so I reset my lights and fog lights.

By removing the light you can gain access to the indicator light. Once you remove the light you can see the amber cube inside. The cube is not brittle but flex able. I used a drill bit to start a hole in the cube. Be careful not to go through the cube and touch the clear shield with the drill bit. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and begin to tear and break up the amber cube in peaces. With persistence you should be able to remove the cube. Watch out for the little peaces they can be hard to get out. I used a vacuum suction to remove the pieces. This is a cost free mode with excellent results. I am very pleased.

Thx Chris

Airbox was shipped this morning. Need to do something about the 3.8, looks kind of stupid on a 3.6 engine.

Let me think, change the graphics, or bore out the engine to match. Hmmmmmm
If only it was that easy, I guess I will have to think of a way to change an 8 into a 6.

Larry, you may want to change the Porsche Serpentine Belt while you are in their. Very easy 5 min. I just changed my 2000 996, once off I could see the ribs were racking and belt was glossy on top.
