Lightbulb another oil thread

FYI, my local costco (Edison, NJ) has Mobil 1 15-W50. 6qt/case for 29.16/case + tax.

this thread is not intended to be a oil debating thread, but apperently costco doesn't sell 0-W40.

I think that is the final shipment of the crude oil which was salvaged from the Exxon Valdeze oil spill and repackaged as Mobile 1 15-W50.

I believe 15-50 is too thick.

We all know the guys at Sears aren't really Porsche experts, the guys to ask are the ones that actually change the oil at Walmart.

I've been doing this to my car: 4 quarts 10w50 and the half...good ole deionized water. It makes the I-6 sing.

I always see the place on the shelf where it should be, but they never seem to have any in-stock locally

I end up paying through the nose at Kragen.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

The recommended motor oil viscosity for the 996 cars are:
0W40
5W40, and
5W50
Other viscosity ranges are NOT recommended (please check your ownre's manual)

The mechanic at the Sears is totally clueless, and his recommendation is nothing but an unmitigated bullsh**

The neglcted fact is that the motor oil for the 996 engine is not exclusively for internal engine lubrication but also for other hydrolic components such as variocam. The recommened viscosity (low W/0-5) is exclusively for proper function of these compenets, particularly for those of you who have Variocam Plus. This issue has been addressed in the latest issue of Excellence magazine. You may even void your warranty if you use other viscosities.

Regards

Actually it's not the manual they need to check but rather the most current TSB listing the approved oils. You are correct on the weights but not on the source. Remember, the rec'd oil was actually 15W-50 in some of the early M96 years. That of course was superceded in the TSB's.
