Default OT: Tax question

I sent my tax off using turbotax but I am afraid it is not correct. There was a text block to put school expenses in and so I did, the catch is that the form my school sent me and what I spent of expenses did not match (I pulled up the credit card charges I spent and subtracted from the total tuition, cost and fees for the year). The other issue is that where the number I put in for the school expenses required an ag exemption type of form, if my memory serves me, obviously I dont have the form the IRS asks for (that corresponds to the output 1040A) and I submitted anyways as I felt it has to be right since this slot asked for school expenses.

It has been several weeks and I have not got back my refund, I am scared I am going to get audited now. Any opinions.

A few years ago I made a typo similar to yours and all they did was send back a note indicating that they caught the error and adjusted the tax return figures accordingly.

Your chances of getting audited are slim, if you get questioned by the IRS and you can support your claim it is no big deal (probably would be by mail) and if you get an overpayment because of an improper return you can file an amended return with a check for the amount of over payment. Don't lose any sleep.

...plus not all of the tax forms are finalized yet and Turbotax are still putting out updates.

My taxes are done, but awaiting their last update on March 14th. In January accountants were advising people to file late this year due to the large number of unfinalized forms caused by tax law changes in December... the steady stream of updates means that if you filed early and the forms were not correct, then neither will be your taxes. If that meant a smaller refund, then that's okay (in the eyes of the IRS), but if it meant that you owed more, then that's not so good.

if u made an error, u need to wait for ur return and then file 1040c I believe. There is a faq on www.irs.gov. Many errors are cought by them but def not all.

Just make sure your car is all buttoned up as if you were going to put in winter storage, 'cuz it could be some time before you get out of jail and drive your P-car again!

Obviously, I am just kidding. You can file an amended return, so don't sweat it!

Hell, I haven't sent in my 2005 tax return yet, and I'm still a free man! Of course they owe me money, so they don't care if I am late in filing. I'll probably just apply the paltry refund to my 2006 taxes.
