Default Question about the c4 cabriolet

Hello. I mostly frequent the 944/OT boards, but have a few quick question regarding the 911 c4. (a family friend just bought it, and i want to congratulate him on his purchase and talk to him about his car( and rennlist) but don't want to sound clueless about it) THANKS!!!

Is this car also called the 996; or which other 9## is given to it?

Any idea as to what year it is from the pic?

Last question: Any "fun facts" about this model? This is the awd model, isn't it?

LOL! Dan. That's the kind of post that gives us 944'ers a bad rap.

(just joking)

yes, that is a 996 designation - i would guess between 2002 and 2004. If it is a carrera 4, then it is all wheel drive. Good luck

Yes is is a 996. The '99 - '01 models have 3.4L engine, no glove box in the dash on the passenger side. The '02 - '04 models have 3.6L engine and a glovebox. There are many other differences, but the "glove box test" will at least let you know which group ('99 - '01 or '02 - '04) this 996 belongs in. Then you have a 33% chance of "guessing" the correct year.

C4 is all wheel drive 996. Normally 5% front and 95% rear. Can change to 40% front and 60% read as needed/derermined by computer software as a result of sensor readings from all 4 wheels.

Hello hockeydude.
As noted, your friend's car is a 3.6L 996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet from MY '02-'04.

A few more *visual* distinguishing factors (from the earlier 3.4L 996) with which to display your knowledge of the 996 and entertain your friend:

Front and Rear bumper covers are different. They were redesigned to increase radiator cooling air flow and reduce aero lift.

Exhaust tips are different. Flatter oval.

Carrera badge on rear deck lid is on lower plane of lower section of lid, 3.4L cars are on upper plane of lower section of lid. And the Carrera 4 badge is silver in lieu of black in color on 2wd cars.

The Carrera 5 spoke wheels on this car were not available on 3.4L cars (however, they will fit them, and some retrofit them to their 3.4's).

Rear "bumperettes" are a different shape and are painted to match the body. On the 3.4, they are black and do not integrate as nicely into the bumper. Many 3.4 owners have the black ones painted body color. Much nicer look.

Different headlight design. The 3.6L cars adopted the headlight design from the 2001 996 Turbo. The 3.4 cars had the headlight design from the 911GT1 and shared these with the 986 Boxster.
