Default Why do you 'blank out' your plates in Pics?

Why does everyone 'blank out' their registration plates when they post pics? I can't imagine it being an 'Identity Theft' issue, after all I get to see many P-car plates when I drive around every day, so why do it on the forums?

Those same thieves could be lurking in my neighbourhood, or at the local mall (in both cases they could still read my plates).

For the same reason you have "myrmidon" as your user name and not your real name. I am certain, like me, most here don't want to reveal their exact identity.

This is true, but we know thieves are lurking on Rennlist and are using the information they can gather to look for cars they can steal. It has happened already on another forum. They are looking for well equipped cars that they can strip and sell off the parts.
My Publisher now blanks out all number plates in my books and this is to avoid legal issues like being blamed and sued if somebody's car is stolen and somehow rightly or wrongly they associate the published picture with the theft.
From a personal point of view I don't care myself because here in Switzerland every Kantonal Government (26 of them in all) each publish a book every year listing all the number plate holders, their number and their address that live in each Kanton.
Ciao,
Adrian.

I can get your social security number too, if I work hard enough (or pay enough), so why not just post it here?

No, it isn't. There's nothing wrong with showing your plate, but there's no good reason to do so unless you want to. I choose to blank mine out in order to remain as anonymous as I can; I blog under the same name.

Of course, nothing online is truly anonymous. Someone may figure out who I am, but they'll have to spend a little time doing it.

I'm a lot more worried about the punk *** kid that wrote the F word on my right rear fender in toothpaste than I am some nutjob with access to DMV records.
