Default Drive and 4th gear lights are blinking

I have 2000 996 Tiptronic. When I drive it, the Drive and 4th gear lights start blinking, and it looks like it stay ate 4th gear. However, when I let engine warm up, and restart the car, this problem goes away. It happended 3 times, and one time check engine light came up also. My mechanic couldn't find the problem, they resetted the error code. Error code was referring to changing selonoids in the transmission. However, given the problem is not repeatable and happens when engine and outside is cold, I am suspecting transmission fluid, or some other faulty mechanism. It looks like transmission fluid is dirty, but I have checked the service manual it does not require transmisison service until 60K miles, currently is at 43K miles.

Any idea?

Thanks!

That's the limp mode when your gear sticks at 4th. That's default gear when there's a problem with the transmission. I would take that as an early warning of something to come, especially when the transmission is concerned, it's NOT cheap at all. If you're lucky, it might end up being just a gear selector switch module. Maybe you should have the dealer check it out.

This is just a follow-up. I took the car to dealer, it was caused by faulty speed sensor. $1200 is the cost of changing it at dealer.
