Don't laugh on the dates because the original plan for both the 993 and the 996 was to launch them in September the ninth month of 1993 and 1996. The 993 went into production in September 1993, but the 996 did not go into production until September 1997.
The Auftragnummer 993 was actually selected in 1989.
All the rest like 928, 944, 914 etc also had a meaning when Porsche Engineering were going through the available Project numbers in the 9XX series. They were NOT picked sequentially as a lot of people like to believe and sometimes the original 9XX Project number was changed to a different 9XX series for the actual type.
A project number ending in a 5 meant that the basic product was designed or was to be manufactured outside of Porsche. This was the plan, but it went wobbly a couple of times.
Project numbers are also recycled. The new 4-door sedan may well have type number 989 which was used for the original 4-door prototype in 1989.
Ciao,

I knew MY = model year but never knew why some people would state "I have a MY02 carrera..." Wouldn't someone naturally think a 2002 WOULD be the model year?
My MY99 was built in 1998. Maybe that is why it is used????

The point is; there is NO logical number picking system.
Project and type numbers were picked by Porsche Engineering, Marketing or the big boss to suit their needs out of the group of numbers that were available at the time.

Of all the threads on this forum, this has got to be the most ridiculous...
Come on...MY clearly establishes the year of the car (e.g., MY 02) is a "Model Year 2002." We all know that the MY and the CY ("Calendar Year") don't always coincide. For instance, how many of us by new cars on 12/31 that are considered the following year models?

Model year is not the same as a calendar year.
The normal ROW (rest of the world) Porsche model year runs from August 1st to July 31st. So a MY02 ROW Porsche would have been built between August 1st 2001 and July 31st 2002, September actually because they are usually on holiday for most of August, but officially its August to July.
For US versions of Porsches the model year has been known to be started earlier, but due to US Federal regulations Porsche introduced option M718 to declare that the VIN model year had been changed from the previous model year to the next.
Option M718 was first introduced in model year 1992 to declare the first batch of 964 RS Americas as 1993 models even though the were built in model year 1992.
Nothing with Porsche is easy to work out and it changes with each series as well. I do not know if option M718 was ever used on the 996 series for the US versions. It was for the first batch of 993s sent to the USA.
