Default 996 clutch replacement price

My 99 996 is at Champion Porsche for service.
I originally took the 996 over there for a 4 wheel alignment at $240.00.

They just called me to say the clutch needs replacement, they want 3K!!!!!

It didnt feel as the clutch was slipping.
The service advisor said that the pedal was too hard and when the
clutch goes there will be no warning.

Does this sound right?

Cool

Yup...

How many miles?

Cost of the repair do seem high... if you search here you will see that people have paid anywhere from 1500.00 up to 2500+ for parts&labor.

Paid $2500 recently for new clutch, aftermarket fvd flywheel and the associated TSB stuff for the 99 for the Release lever and RMS since it looked wet.

It was done on my car when the RMS was replaced (by the previous owner). $1500.

Did mine for $1,300 locally here at a good independent shop, after the stealership quoted me $1,800. Worst part was that I only had the car for 1k miles when it happened.

Of coarse there is plenty of warning. You will also need the new actuator lever when you do replace the clucth. Also, if the clutch is not slipping, I would bleed the system and see how it feels. $1500 would be a fair price if you get a new ckutch and lever.

The mileage is 47.5K.
I'll check out some local shops and make a decision.
Thanks guys for your input!

Just curious- How was the car driven? i.e. passively or aggressively? or? Not making any judgements, just curious as mileage for clutch seems somewhat low.

Keep in mind that one of the primary responsibilities of the Service Team is to upsell. That's why you'll see many Dealers offer various services such as oil changes for free, just to get their hands on your car and then attempt to get you to buy their premium services. This is the Car Dealers' version of you have just won a free vacation in some vacation paradise, and all you have to do to qualify is to listen to a "short" presentation about some outstanding opportunity that will save you thousands of dollars.

Having said that, if your clutch hsn't been changed since 1999, it may indeed need replacement. I nevertheless would be very skeptical about their recommendation, especially since you haven't noticed any differances yourself with respect to how the clutch feels and performs.

If you can't get 50,000 miles out of an aggressive street driven clutch, your should be driving a Tip. This assumes that you have no mechanical problems such as some of the early 996's did with the lever. Those that are less aggressive should see upwards of 80,000+ miles.
